I have three children and my two youngest 3.5 and 2.5 do not have the title but are in the prescription approving stage of receiving therapy as part of helping them. It is very tough. Sometimes you just want to be like AHHHHHHHHH!

I HAVE TWO SONS AND A DAUGHTER. BOTH OF MY SONS HAVE AUTISM. JACOB IS 16 AND JOSHUA IS 15. JACOB IS VERY HIGH FUNCTIONING AND GETS EXCELLENT GRADES IN SCHOOL. HE HAS NEVER BEEN INVITED OVER TO ANYONES HOUSE, HAS NO FRIENDS, AND IS VERY AWKWARD IN SOCIAL SITUATIONS. HE HAS VERY HIGH ANXIETY ABOUT CERTAIN THINGS (HIS NEWEST IS THE SWINE FLU OUTBREAK) AND STRUGGLES WITH OCD. NO ONE IN HIS SCHOOL KNOWS ABOUT HIS ASPERGER'S PER HIS WISHES. I AM VERY PLEASED THAT HE IS DOING SO WELL IN SCHOOL, BUT I SURE DO WISH HE WOULD BE ABLE TO HAVE SOME FRIENDS...
JOSHUA IS MUCH LOWER FUNCTIONING. HE IS JUST NOW STARTING TO VOCALIZE AND EXPRESS HIS WANTS/NEEDS. HE LOVES ANIMALS AND MAKES ALL KINDS OF LISTS (EG: MAMMALS, KID'S MENUS, CARTOONS ON BOOMBERANG). HE DOES A LOT OF CARTOON MEMORIZATION AND WILL REPEAT WHAT THE CARTOON CHARACTERS SAY, BUT WILL NOT WANT TO HAVE A CONVERSATION WITH PEOPLE. HE MAKES ME LAUGH ALMOST EVERYDAY. WHEN HE WAS YOUNG WE WENT THROUGH A VERY EXCRUCIATING SEASON WITH HIM SMEARING HIS BM'S, BREAKING EVERYTHING, SELF AGGRESION (AND MOM AGGRESION), STAYING DRESSED, AND MANY OTHER THINGS. TO ALL THE MOTHERS OUT THERE THAT ARE IN THAT SEASON... THERE IS HOPE!
ONE THING THAT I DO WANT TO EXTEND IS TO NEVER STOP HUGGING YOUR AUTISTIC KIDS, AND TALK TO THEM AS THOUGH THEY DO UNDERSTAND. MY SON USE TO DISLIKE HUGS, BUT WE ARE A VERY LOVING FAMILY AND CONTINUED TO HUG AND SQUEEZE HIM. NOW HE WILL COME TO US FOR HUGS WITH A BIG SMILE ON HIS FACE! THEIR BODY'S SENSITIVITY REVOLTS FROM HUGS BUT THE LOVELY CHILD INSIDE REALLY DOES WANT AND NEED THE LOVE. REPETITION IS KEY! MY OLDER SON EXPLAINED TO ME THAT HIS AUTISM FELT LIKE, "STATIC IN THE BRAIN" AND HE TOLD ME THAT ALL OF HIS SENSES ARE SUPER MAGNIFIED (SMELLS, TOUCH, HEARING, TASTE, SIGHT). THAT IS WHY CERTAIN TEXTURES OF FOOD, FABRICS (BTW... TAGLESS SHIRTS ARE THE GREATEST INVENTION EVER!), MUSIC ALL HAVE AN AFFECT ON THESE SPECIAL KIDS. JUST BECAUSE THEIR BODY RECOILS DOES NOT MEAN THE MIND WITHIN THE CHILD DO NOT DESIRE IT.... CAN YOU IMAGINE TRYING TO CONCENTRATE WITH A TV ON A LOUD STATION THAT ONLY PLAYED STATIC? HOW DIFFICULT IT MUST BE FOR THEM!
MY HEART AND PRAYERS GO OUT TO ALL OF YOU MOMS THAT WERE SEEN WORTHY TO BE BLESSED WITH THESE WONDERFULLY SPECIAL KIDS.
AUTISM? MORE LIKE AWETISM!

I have boy/girl twins who are on the spectrum. They are 8 years old. My daughter was diagnosed with PDD-NOS. My son was diagnosed with mild autism. They are so different. My son is social, loves everyone and knows everyones names and birthday. lol! Even waiters at restaurants! :) But, he has a hard time learning. He's in a mainstreamed class but pulled out for resource most of the day. My daughter does very well at school (only has one IEP and that's to go to resource when needed). But, she has a harder time being social. It's hard for her to strike up a conversation and stay on a topic.
I wouldn't trade them for anything. They are so loving and affectionate but life is a little harder for them. In my case, I definitely think autism is genetic. I never saw any changes after vaccines.

it makes me very angry when people jump to conclusions about spectrum kids you would think with all the publicity that people would realise that there might be a problem but it seems unless it touches them they dont think about it , well i hope it never touches them but i do wish sometimes they could spend the day as me lol let them deal with the meltdowns they wouldnt be so brave at having a go at someone then

I have 2 boys on the spectrum. One is 18 years and he has high functioning autism and the other is 16 years with aspergers/bipolar. Hang in there becasue it does get better as they get older. Doctors told us that our oldest mught never walk or talk and now he is driving and working at Magic Mountain. yes it can be very stressfull but don't ever give up hope.

Have identical twin boys seven with PDD - one is PDD-NOS, the other PDD with Asberger's. They are so different, though, in their issues. Also have a girl two nothing known although the doctor is concerned because she seems to have a meltdown in that office every time we're there. Feel free to add me as a friend as I would like to talk with all of you and get to know you. We probably need to mentor each other to help maintain our sanity!!!!
One of my boys had a meltdown because his twin talked him into spending their money together for cards and his buyers remorse hit immediately at the register directly afterwards. He had a meltdown and threw what was left of his coins into the air and one hit a woman. She came over to me and told me what horrible children I had and how horrible of a mother I was and that she was a teacher, etc. I just took it and cried when we got into the car. I'm so good natured I'm not wired to be mean or fight back as I was embarrassed of my son's actions. This was about a year ago when they were ADHD and PDD was unknown to me. I'm so happy I found you guys as I'm having trying times, too (but an optimist by nature)!

I have a 6yr old son with autism, he is verbal. However his verbal is all echoing only. I have a 5yr old and 4 yr old girl that are "normal"
My 3yr old girl has PICA, possible ADHD and as of last Thursday was diagnosed with autism. She is currently has 4 words.
Our house has lots of meltdowns and screaming kids around the clock. My 6 yr old sleeps about 4 hours a night, if we are lucky its all at once!
You are not alone. It is stressful having 2 kids with autism.

hi,
I have three sons, two which have autism. Casey is 12 and has autism and Kevin is 16 and has moderate mental retardation and autism. Both boys were diagnosed at the age of three. It has been like a rollecoaster with them. We've had good times as well as bad times. Our strong faith in God has helped us through it all. I also found that attending a life skills class at my sons school was a tremendous help. I learned how to teach them skills as well as eliminate some bad behaviors. Also, it was like a support group for parents as many of developed strong friendships which was a big help having someone to talk to. I think we all could say that if you want to talk..we are all here! take care,

Yes! twin boys diagnosed autistic. hang in there!! it is hard! other parents will never understand completely what we go through. i found that you need time to yourself almost everyday to keep your sanity...so usually i go jogging for like 1/2 hour...its a great stress reliever. if you can get someone to stay with them for just a 1/2 hour a day which i know sometimes can be impossible :( but if you can it will make your life that much easier. :)

IT'S SO NICE TO KNOW THERE ARE OTHER MOMS OUT THERE DEALING WITH THE SAME DAY TO DAY CHALLENGES THAT I AM. MY 7 YEAR OLD HAS PDD/ADD AND MY 5 YEAR OLD HAS SEVERE AUTISM AND IS NON VERBAL. THE GOOD DAYS AND ALL THE SMILES MAKE IT WORTH IT BUT THERE ARE ALOT OF STRESSFUL TIMES TOO. ONE DAY AT A TIME!

I have a son with autism. He is 4 years old and just began his therapy treatments today. It is very stressful. I also have another son who just turned 2. As far as we know so far, he is developing normally. Hang in there. The good days are sooo worth it.

Hi! I also have four sons and my two youngest have autism. I have an 11 year old who is neuro-typical, nine year old twins--one is neuro typical and the youngest twin has autism and my 6 year old also has autism! We have learned to deal with the looks we get in public when they melt down. Let me know if you just want to talk it helps sometimes to have someone to talk to!
