Is your child going to summer camp?

My 11 year old son would love nothing more than to go to overnight camp this summer. He and his sister have attended our church kids' camp for the past two years with absolutely no problems at all, but everyone there knows my children and the particular needs that my son has. There are a couple of camps that might work, but I want to be sure that the counselors are able to deal with any Asperger situations that might come up. Also, I am not finding anything in my area that we could possibly afford. Does anyone have any resources (not financial, although wouldn't that be great!) that they could share with me?

Yes, my daughter who is 11 years old attends Gril Scout camp overnight camp for a week at a time. The first time was a little hard for her as she was anxious about being away from home. She has Asperger"s. But she is EXTREMELY outgoing and friendly, over bearing at times even, and she really enjoys going. I am a full time nursing student (graduating this weekend actually) and have not been able to afford to pay the full tuition for camp. But I applied through the girl scout council and have been granted every year tuition assistance so she has been able to attend. Is your son in Scouts? Maybe that would work.... ?

This is one of those things that can be very good or very bad. I have let my son go and they were not prepared to deal with him and his needs. Please be sure the camp staff can deal with his needs. Like your son mine has a great time when he goes with boy scouts because they know him and his needs. Try a day camp first or some offer half week sessions. Most camps have camperships, I don't know if you could still get one this late in the season. I wish you luck finding a camp for your son!
