I'm new to this... and I'm scared! My son is 28 months has not been diagnosed but is getting reevaluated. The first evaluation he was just said to have a developmental delay, but under observation for Autism. They gave him speech once a week, OT and a teacher for half hour every other week. Two to three months later I know my son has regressed so much... his speech therapist gave up on him, and he hasn't received speech in a month - apparently it is difficult for some absurd reason to find an English speaking speech therapist in queens, ny. I hate the entire process. I need to know if anyone knows of a daycare in or around queens,ny with teachers trained to help children on the spectrum. He has always been taken care of by his grandparents but we are testing having him in a daycare - he was doing fine but lately he's just in his own world. And I'm tired of going to pick him up at the center and finding him in a corner spinning some object - we've told them to redirect him but they say they can't force him to be where he doesn't want to be. HELP!

Hi,

Are you going thru early intervention? They provide free speech/OT until they are 3,then when they are 3 he can go to preschool for FREE,if he is delayed.

I think it is absurd for the SLP to give up,obviously she has no idea what she is doing!

Hi , im from brooklyn and currently in Queens ny, my son just graduated preschool from BIRCH...Birch is in all 5 boroughs n is HIGHLY recommended!.. They use the TEACH method which help our kids become more independant, it provides structure with helping them follow their own schedule each day, increase vocabulary, kids get all services they r in need of like speech, ot, pt...My son is a diffent child since starting BIRCH..Please check for Birch closest to you. You will never believe how much potential ur child will reach in the short amount of time preschool is!!!

That's ludicrous! His speech therapist gave up on him????? Excuse me but WTF?? I've never heard of such a thing. Try Autism Speaks in your area for some support. Here are some things I found:

The meet up group would be excellent for him, it's all toddlers with autism and you could get tips from the moms.
