Hi my name is Terasa. I have a 7 y/o son who is currently diagnosed ADHD and ODD since 5. Been on lots of the meds, and most just made him more angry. After being put into a Occ & speech therapy play group, i started to see similarities in the stories of the parents. Most of these kids have Aspergers. I have recently had him to a developmental Ped dr and she doesnt see any reason to test for asd. Here are what we go thru.
1) severe ADHD-hyper, impulsive, destructive, inattentive.
2) only really likes to play video games of any sort. If he plays to much, his aggression gets real bad, and he has taken a liken to peeing on the family room floor instead of stopping to use the bathroom. He asks for toys but gets bored with them after a few days and only wants his games. particially my fault becuz I need my sanity....single mom of 3
3)he LOVES bugs
4) uses language very well for his age, but doesnt have the ability to speak what he needs, feeling, and understand others very well.causes tempers. was told to read the book "the explosive child" by dr ross greene.
5) if he knows you and likes you, he appears normal....anything/anybody new he doesnt want to do. kindergarten was so difficult i am now homeschooling 1st grade.
6) very stressful pregnancy with him. His dad was diagnosed terminal the day before i found out I was prego. Dad died at 4 mons prego and many stress, fights, and despression. Poor kid was destined to have probs.
Can someone give me an opinion? If you need more info plz let me know. I just need some direction I am so overly overwhelmed that i cant even fight anymore. I know he does have sensory issues as well. thanks a million

Definitely get a second opinion.

It does sound like the AS to me. My son, now 17, was very hyperactive when young. could only nap if I drove in the car, couldn't sleep at night unless next to us etc.He always talked loudly and now I know it is because of his AS- he is not aware of how loud he talks. He may feel pain when he shouldn't (lightly bump him and he acts injured) or not feel pain when hurt badly. MDs often don't know much about these issues. My ped used to tell me "Everythings fine" when I wanted to tear out my hair in frustration. We received a conclusive diagnosis from a neuropsychologist after she did a multitude of tests. The proper medication has helped him enormously. By law, your local school district has to test him if you request it. Also, kids who are AS can appear to be ODD when it is really aspergers (and many with AS have some degree of OCD.) They need to know ahead of time what is happening and you have to read their body language to see if they are about to explode- and redirect before this point. They have trouble processing their emotions. It can look like ODD, when they are really just trying to make sense of the world.

You can make an appt. for him to see a Psychologist. They are also able to diagnose/test for autism. Getting an appt. with one doesn't require a referral so sometimes it is easier to get in. Good luck, and I agree... would seek another opinion!

I would get a second opinion. And if that doesn't work get a third.
I believe meds take care of the symtoms but not the cause or help they need.
I have done ABA. Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is the science of controlling and predicting human behavior. Behavior analysts reject the use of hypothetical constructs[1] and focus on the observable relationship of behavior to the environment. By functionally assessing the relationship between a targeted behavior and the environment, the methods of ABA can be used to change that behavior. Research in applied behavior analysis ranges from behavioral intervention methods to basic research which investigates the rules by which humans adapt and maintain behavior.

And there is something I have never heard of called Relationship Development Intervention. I have heard good things about this. http://www.autismweb.com/rdi.htm
I would definitely suggest one of these for behavior modification.
Here is some info on sensory issues: http://autism.lifetips.com/cat/66419/sen...

Hope this helps!
