Hi. I'm new to this site. My son has PDD and will be 4 in a couple of weeks. He just makes the cut off date to start Kindergarten next Fall. I would like to hold him back and have one more year of Pre-school services. I am told that this is very hard to do. Does anyone know if I have a chance of this happening and how I would go about making this happen? I appreciate any help that you can provide me. Thank you very much.

My son is 5 and just began kindergarten, he too has a diagnosis of PDD. Depending on where you live it can be difficult. Not all states have the same laws. You can request to meet with your school districts pre-school IEP team and make the request in writting to have him evaluated to see if he is trully ready for kindergarten or if he would benefit from another year of pre-k. But, most school districts offer the same services to school aged and pre-school children. All three of mine are on the spectrum. Two are in school, one is in preschool. My middle son, who just began kindergarten, is thriving in his school. If you are not able to get an IEP determination of preschool, then if you feel strongly about it, kindergarten isn't manadatory in most states. You can opt to hold him back. But, like I said, my son is doing surprisingly well there. The only thing I really recommend is to carefully go over his current IEP before you sit down to make out his new one for kindergarten. Look for services that are really helping and one's that need to be tweaked. The law says the school has to do whatever is necessary to make his time there succesful within reason. Most schools are very happy for parent input and will usually take your requests with more weight than that of his teachers. I have also taken the extra step in the past of getting referalls from my childrens pediatrician to take with me to the school board. Just another suggestion. I hope these help. Good luck with everything. :)
