Sensory issues - feel and sound; eating

Do any of you with Asperger's diagnosis have sensory issues? My 13 year old will even not eat his favorite foods that he fixes himself if the first bite doesn't taste or feel right. I'm suspecting a high-functioning autism of some sort (other variables included). He also will lose favorites after a bad experience. Medication changes in the past can change how food tastes to him and he'll refuse to eat them. He went through a period where chicken tasted like fish to him and he refused to eat any chicken.

Thanks for any input.

I know how overwhelming it is...it wasn't that long ago that I was in the dark clinging to all the bits & pieces of information I could get, but not really understanding anything...I guess I'm fortunate, I've been getting a lot of help from the school system and we have the Dan Marino Center relatively close with a great staff, as well as a lot of local resources. My son is extremely thin, too & has also always worn clothes for years as well. It takes a very long time to get a diagnosis and there are several screenings to go through along the process...In fact, so far it is only the school that has given him any sort of diagnosis, nothing medical yet. All I can say is hang in there, try to be patient & keep looking for answers... if you aren't satisfied with a provider, try to find another one & don't settle for a provider that can not give you the answers you need...if you don't already, you will soon understand the puzzle - piece concept...it is just like trying to put together a puzzle, getting pieces one at a time. All the best to you!

Sounds like I've been associating Asperger's with high-functioning autism. This is a new avenue for me to explore into his symptoms. I just know right now that quite a few people on this board that have children with the exact same symptoms/behaviors my son has struggled with over the years. I do not have a diagnosis for him yet. I just found out today that a Psychiatrist cannot do tests/screenings like Psychologists. I was mistakenly under the impression that a Psychiatrist is to a Psychologist like an Opthalmologist was to an Optometrist. Boy was I wrong! No wonder I am not getting anywhere with his Psychiatrist!

I cannot remember now if we've tried Strattera before, but I think we have. Concerta so far has been the only one where he would actually eat and maintain focus. The others either kept him from eating and/or were like candy - no results. I think Strattera was both of those for him. He has a very high metabolism. He's also not in a position to risk losing weight from not eating. He'll be 14 in July. He's finally in size 10slim jeans. Size 8 jeans are too short now. He stays in each size for several years at a time. He's 69lbs in the 7th grade. The doctor said he probably won't even start growing until 16. He's not showing any signs of puberty yet. They are also watching him for scoliosis which won't show in the xray until puberty growth?! He'll be xrayed again in July. He's failed the screening for that at the last 2 physicals (curve on bend over test).

Thanks for replying!!! :) I've got a lot to sort through.

I don't really have any advice, but my son is also a very picky eater due to sensory issues...he has more of a classic autism (high-functioning), not Asperger's but I have been told it is very common. You may want to talk to your doctor about Strattera...it is supposed to treat eating disorders due to high anxiety.
