My six yr. old son was diag. with SPD just before he went into k-5 last yr. He goes to occupational therapy once a week and we are about to start going twice a week over the summer. He is having to REPEAT k-5. Because he has a very hard time comprehending things like a typical person. Has anyone here ever heard of sensory processing disorder? Or dealt with it? I try to get info on it and read books about it, and its all very confusing. I try so hard to show him whats going on to catch him up with his peers, and cant! He has a "melt down" and I dont want that... I feel so bad. like I dont know how to get threw to him.

I agree with Renee. It won't hurt anything just to have the evaluation. Plus they can figure out what he needs and it will make your life a lot easier! My son is 2 and not talking much. I asked my pediatrician to refer me to the pediatric developmental evaluation.just to know what we are dealing with. The appointment will be at the end of Sept! Ugh I hate that we have to wait that long.We just got a speech therapist through the state. Today was her 2nd visit and she threw out this term "sensory processing disorder" and that he may have it. That is why I am on here because I have no idea what that means! Laura, I would just get an evaluation done so you have done everything possible for him. It is very scary, I know. I too am confused, frustrated, and scared about what all this means for my son.

Laura - I'm not trying to be cruel here but your childs' regular pediatrician cannot diagnose autism either. It must be a neurologist, developmental pediatrician or child psychologist. Anyone else cannot give the official diagnosis. And no the OT is not allowed to mention autism, it's against the law for them to say anything unless you bring it up. Your child is displaying so many signs and symptoms of autism. You need a referral for a complete evaluation by a qualified professional.

The reason your child is having trouble just getting through the day is because of the underlying situation. I urge you to get the evaluation or assessment. The school can do it to - for free.

Good luck.

We live in SC and he was diagnosed by his peditrician with SPD... not Autism/ asperbergers. I was only saying in the last comment that his behavior was very similar alot of times to those disorders.
I however, dont belive its autism, only because he has been going to O.T and they would have mentioned that to me. If you would know of any programs or where to go or what to do it would be extremely helpful. Im really feeling at a dead end here. People dont SEE the stress and frustration that my son goes threw evryday just for daily tasks. he cant just be a normal, carefree , kid. And it breaks my heart. It almost seems like this disorder is not reconized, therefore... no support. Or maybe Im Not looking in the right places...I just want him to be happy.

First who diagnosed your son? Sensory Processing disorder can be diagnosed bya speech or occupational therapist - they however, cannot give a diagnosis of autism/asbergers. Please have your child evaluated by a developmental pediatrician, neurologist or child psychologist as soon as possible. They can give you the autism/asbergers diagnosis. Your child is displaying many of the signs of autism. The sooner you get the diagnosis, the faster he qualifies for services. Go to amazon and look at books for autism. The school can provide an evaluation free of charge (by a psychologist).

The reason you son is having a meltdown is because he is in "his world" the autism world and by trying to connect with him you are trying to bring him into our world - it's a birght, loud scary place. You need the services that come witth the diagnosis. It also helps to know where you live as different states have different programs.

If I could try to explain it so you could understand, its like he's right in between having Asperger's and ADHD. Ummmm.... he has a Real hard time just with simple comprehension with everyday tasks. like if I try to tell him a 2 step direction... it can be hard for him. he has a real hard time looking at people iin the eyes, noises USED to bother him, but not so much anymore (depends on how tired he is) He cant verbalize what he wants to say like a typical 6 yr. old would either. I usually have to figure out what he's trying to say. He hates getting his hands dirty. And he becomes overwhelmed by smells. He cant tolerate lights either. The verbal skills is what the most frustating right now. because he will be trying to explain himself, thinking he's saying the right thing, when in actuality he is saying something completly wrong and he ends up in trouble, or his feelings hurt, or frustrated. Im frustrated too because I see what he's going threw and I just dont know how to help him.

I am still in the learning phase myself but just picked up a great book last night.. It's alled Autism Spectrum Disorders The Complete Guide to Understanding Autism, Asperger's Syndrom, Pervasive Developmental Disorder and Other ASD's by Chantal Sicile-Kira.. you might want to check it out.. it covers everything from diet to discipline, education etc.. and it has a wealth of information for outside services such as websites and phone numbers to call for support/help lines so on and so forth.. Good luck and keep me posted on anything you find out and I will keep in touch with you as well! god Bless! ~Suzanne

My son has Asperger's and sensory issues always come along with that. I think it's great you have him in occupational therapy, my son was in that for a while and it helped him alot. What are some kinds sensory problems are you dealing with? My son is sensitive to touch, bright lights, loud noises, he freaks out in large groups of people cause he's afraid some one will touch him or talk to him. There's lots of things like I've dealt with that I can give you some tips that will help. Is that what your looking for, sorry just trying to understand exactly what you need:)
