Has anyone purchased a stroller for your autistic child? My daughter is almost 5 yrs old and it is beneficial for us to have her in a stroller when we go place for several reasons, but she is outgrowing the stroller we currently own ( a graco). Does anyone have suggestions for a stroller for a 5 yr old? Thanks so much.

My son still uses the stroller I got for him when he was a year old. It's a Maclaren Techno XT. It holds kids up to 55lbs, though I think my daughter is 60+lbs and she still sits in it sometimes with no problems. It has held up great and folds up way smaller than most full-size strollers.

Tina...do they have regular strollers but able to support a 5year old +....or are they more medical looking?
I am looking for just a regular type stroller.

A lot of insurances/state medicaid will cover these special strollers. I just went to my local medical equipment dealer and they fitted her and took care of getting it covered by our insurance. Good luck!

Our son is 10 years old and his insurance paid for a special need stroller for him. We got it last year and its a huge help especially when we go to Disney World..

Hi Tracy,

A special needs stroller (for children/adults to about 100lbs can be purchased through specialty shops...Flaghouse is a company that deals with equipment like strollers for older children/adults.

As well, Fisher price had this GREAT two seater wagon...it had a capacity for up to 150 pounds. The seats had straps/seatbelts. When I taught in a special needs class, we had two of these wagons that we would take out with us...they retailed at $200 Canadian. I believe the wagon was called The Explorer...but I could be wrong. It handled beautifully, and was very easy to manage. good wheels.

I purchased ours from Toys R Us, but have not seen one in the stores for a couple of years...might just be the retailer we have.

So, if the larger strollers (that can run well over $750 Canadian) are too expensive, look into this wagon (if you can find it). Like I said, it was great (wheels collapsed in, like a stroller....so, it was pretty transportable)

Good luck,

Sheila
