Thoughts on "autism cards"??

A friend was telling me about "autism cards" that are used to promote awareness and diffuse embarrassing situations. I have seen a few different types with short, eloquent explanations of autism and why the child may be behaving differently. Any thoughts on if this actually works? Is a good idea?

I think it depends on the individual and your feeling toward handing out cards.

I wouldn't personally use them unless my child was extremely difficult for me to handle and was much more severely disabled than he is. I like the idea of having a medical alert bracelet or other ID system on the child in case he is lost and doesn't respond to someone trying to help him. In that case, it's more of a safety issue. The possibility of my child causing a scene doesn't bother me, but if it bothers you you may consider the cards.
