Any suggestions on how to get my 8 year old autistic step son to eat vegetables without throwing up?

Quoting Jamie:

Let me know what works for you my son is 9 and only likes french fries! He doesn't like juices just water and milk. I tried puree veges in his food and he could taste it!! Nobody else could just him! Now he wont eat spaghetti because that is what I put pureed carrots in! So I don't mess with his food, he is so limited as it is so I make sure he has a mult-vitamin and the doctor told me not to worry about it!

What form does he take the vitamin in? My son won't take chewee sweet types or the liquid drops in a drink without alot of persuasion (fight!)

seems like this is a common problem! My son now 4 and half yrs old used to eat veggies as a baby, then he wouldn't so i hid them in spag bol. now he wont eat anything with veggies in or anything wet (any kind of sauce, pasta, mashed potato etc). even tried turkey dinosaurs with veg hidden inside but he gagged on them. wont even have any puree food. He is high functioning ASD. any ideas for this?

My son won't touch any fruit ar vegetables. I tried making him a smoothie with apple in it once, even before we knew about he's autism, he told me that it had banana in and didn't like it.

He used to love fruit and vegetables baby food when he was a baby, but now won't eat it. I'm gonna try to make biscuits with fruit puree in it.

Of course, the kids also pick up that your stressed that they are not eating and make them more anxious about it! My sister would freak out so much over what her son was eating and it just made meal time worse. Will your child drink chocolate milk? I used to put ovaltine (which does have a lot of vitamins) in her rice milk. (She is allergic to cow's milk). You know they are getting something that way....

depending on how HF he is, you might ask him what he does not like about the veggies. Maybe he does not like very mild or very bland veggies that his mom serves, or she under or over cooks them? Have you tried letting him help you cook them, or season them? My 3 year old ( neuro typical) will try just about anything once, if it is while we are cooking.

I would also make sure to put a small spoonful on his plate of whatever veggie you make that day. He just might try it.

My son refuses to eat  ANY vegetables--but loves the V8 Fusion juice!! I keep different flavors on hand for him to choose from.

I don't know if this will help you, but my son is three years old and has moderate autism.  He is VERY picky, like most autistic kids....but I have seen him open up to foods by imitation.  He loves the show Caillou on PBS.  On one show, Caillou went to an apple orchard and ate an apple, something I could not get Easton to eat.  Easton saw that and then said, "apple" and ate some!  I also do the pureeing thing and V-8 Fusion is a staple in our house.

I agree with giving the kiddos the juice with veggie juice in it! It is a life saver. Also, when you make your meals, serve one food you know your child likes each meal. You know he is eating something, and you are making him aware of the other foods. My daughter is still a picky eater, but we can get her to take "baby" bites of new foods. But the whole process started by just getting her used to seeing them on her plate, then touching them, then sniffing them, then licking them...etc. She loves baby spinach leaf salad with ranch dressing now...go figure! But she hates green beans, corn, peas, veggies most kids will eat! She also doesn't like rice or ground beef (unless it is made into a hamburger patty) it is something with the texture. I used to mix pureed veggies into pancakes, applesauce, pudding, anything that would disguise what she was eating and sometimes it worked! Good luck!

My son is 13 and has PDD-NOS and ADHD. He has had food aversions for a long time. A friends mom got him hooked on V8 fusion and he drinks it often. She also got him to sort of like broccoli by letting him put ranch dressing on it. He does eat corn, carrots, cauliflower, and green beans without too much of a problem. Has anyone tried using puree ( even baby food) veggies in things such as soups and meatloaf? For a while I put a jar of babyfood veggies ( such as mixed veggies, or even spinach) in my meatloaf instead of one of the eggs. No one knew and said it was a great meatloaf! What about very small dices of veggies in things such as chinese fried rice?

We have been giving our son juice with the veggies in it. So far he is accepting it. I just keep a few different flavours in the fridge for him to choose and nothing else but water, silk, and milk of the other kids. When he picks juice it has some veggies it in. So far this has been our only option to get any veggies in him. Some is better than none for us at least.
Hope that helps.

I have a 10 years old son with Asperger/Dyspraxia/ADHD... Food is a very complex thing for us. There are certain category of food he can't eat because he will throw up (ex: pie, meat pie, anything with crust), he can't eat raw veggies, but cooked it's ok, he doesn't eat donuts nor cakes, but he likes every kind of meat, fishes and sea food included (as long as there is no crust). There was a period where he couldn't eat any rice. The texture of food is very important for kid (and adults) with autism. We have to respect that.

What i did with my son, is that i don't force him to eat anything is mouth can't stand, but he has to try a small bite. If he feels he's gonna throw up, he's allowed to spit it in a napkin. And that's how i found that cooked veggies are ok for him instead of raw, and now, he even eat cooked mushrooms (and actually loves it!). So it proved him that taste can vary, and one day, you like something you didn't a week, a month or a year before.

I believe that with those kids particullarly, we have to be firm, but open and receptive to their limitation!

Good luck to you, and i hope that will help a little!

p.s. a therapist once told me that we have to choose our battle! To chose the battles we can win! a V-8 can also be his source of vegetables for a wile!

I'm a big fan of purees, just to get the nutrients into the kid. I like www.thesneakychef.com. My son's OT says kids often won't eat certain foods because of oral motor weakness or sensory defensiveness. Ask your OT or speech therapist if your son has sensory or motor issues that could be turning him off from vegetables - for my son, we're working on desensitizing his mouth so he will be able to tolerate different textures. Good luck!

have you tried disguising them with food he likes ie, making carrot cake or adding pureed vegetables to omelets?
