What are your child's silly meltdown triggers?

I realize that meltdowns are NOT funny. However, some of the things our kids meltdown about can be "silly". Sometimes we just have to laugh to keep from crying! What are some of your child's odd/silly meltdown triggers?

For us, my son meltdowns when the bite marks in his hamburger don't line up exactly, or when the opening to his straw isn't perfectly round (especially after HE bites and flattens it). He also meltdowns if his Nutrigrain bar breaks and screams at me to "fix it".

In the moment, the meltdown has to be dealt with, but I'm sure there are things that we all think, "What's the big deal?".

The Box. Every morning at breakfast, YDS comes downstairs to eat and ODS doesn't want him looking at him. So I have to put up the Box - it's a HUGE box from when DH ordered tailight covers for his truck. But the kids can't see around it. ODS screams until I put up the Box so YDS can't look at him while he eats. And the Box has to be in a certain orientation as well, with the picture on the front facing ODS. I hate that Box.

my son will have a drink that he really likes drink some til he is out of breath then like a force of nature pour it out and then realize what happen and throw a really big fit.
Also the same with food that crumbles easy crumbles and screams cause he cant stop or something.
His sister for some reason she cant get to close or he starts.
If certain people get near him when he is eating, certain voices, and some music

Reality television, comedy, and business news - he runs from the room or if he is eating - we have to turn off the tv. We aren't sure why he doesn't like it, also if someone touches him when he doesn't expect he will knock the person out. He doesn't really have crying tantrums anymore as we have been working on teaching him words that he can use to express his feelings but the comedy thing is just weird.

It's so great to read the stories of other kid's meltdowns. My son is 10 now. His trigger used to be cereal LOL! He would honestly almost hav panic attacks if there was even 1fruit loop on the counter or table next to him! He onced begged his preschool teacher to not make him eat the cereal when they were making a fruit loop necklace! He has never been forced to eat cereal. Now at 10 his meltdowns come about if you talk to him to much or if there is too much noise.

Transitions from one thing to another at School even if it is a "fun" thing he loves... Hates stopping one thing to start another and if his DVD is scratched or not working for some reason - too many hand prints.... Everyone runs upstairs to fix it..... Even his sister!!! It gets the desired outcome and yes you have to laugh when there are a hundred elephants running up one set of stairs for the "fix"!!! Who are the silly ones!!! :-)

Sippy cups. I have twins both on the spectrum, and if I mix the sippies...it is meltdown city.

my daughter has ASD and has similar meltdowns if her nutirgrain bar breaks. She also gets upset if she can't run ahead on a walk because of her harness. My husband and I are big U2 fans, and we have several concert DVD's we like to watch. Jordan only wants to watch one and gets very angry if we put on something different.

My daughter has autism and she has a thing for lining things up and color coding them. I sometimes purposely take an object out and she starts telling me repeatedly, "NO,NO,NO,NO!!" once I put it back it's as if i just turned off the water from the faucet.

When I try to park my car and have to back up and try again. My son will start yelling at me saying no no no!! (i guess he thinks we going to leave if i back up) Another funny bit i have to add cause this made me think of it. He is the best backseat driver. Red light stop! green light go, go! Slow down mom mom. lol and i thought my mom was bad when i learned how to drive. :D

Is it terrible to find relief and laughter in knowing that there are other parents who go through the same "triggers" as I do!! I think my two spectrum kids could fit all the scenarios above!! Until recently, mine would FREAK if I put their food on the wrong plate.....yes, they prefer a particular colored plate and cup and heaven forbid anyone else use it or I try and put their food on the wrong one. Thankfully, they have slowly relaxed those standards.

oh it can be anything at all... I never know what it will be until it happens, but the one that will set him off for sure is if I make his sandwich with both pieces of bread on top of each other instead of two separate sandwiches with each piece just folded in half... go figure! lol

Gosh my son 9 yrs, has such an inbuilt justice system and the fact is I do understand, it is others... I have been told recently that I reason with him way too much... he is black and white and he always needs the logic attached to the situation. It is sad people don't understand and our darlings look like everyone else. People would be more understanding if he was in a wheelchair or had a white cane and I am thankful he doesn't, as this is enough for me to manage....

Today my son burst out crying while looking at a hand size broom and then he bit it. If I dont take time to laugh to myself I end up crying out loud.

my daughter has tantrums if she can't pick her infant sisters outfit out. she throws fits if she can't set the dinner table or can't get everybody everything. Which as a busy mom trying to go to school and work, I sometimes just throw things together that without thinking I just do, and she has such a tantrum that she won't eat and won't talk to anyone. Trying to help her is a big touchy spot too.

My son doesn't like it when people try to help him with something, even if he really needs help. He will throw a FIT if you try to help. He also doesn't like it if foods on his plate are touching another.

My son used to have meltdowns whenever people clapped. This was always a big issue when we tried to eat at a restaurant where the staff sang and performed birthday songs. There's be a moment of silence after the song ended when he'd scream, "Nooo!" And ditto Marta, my son hates it when I sing. He yells, "No singing!"

Lately, one of the biggies is that he has to get into the van on the side opposite his booster seat. A few weeks ago, my daughter closed the door as he jumped in and nearly squished him in half. Thank God we have sensors and the doors reopened. I was on one side and he had run to the other. Anyway, even if he's the only kid going, he has to get in the passenger side and I have to buckle him from the driver's side.

Anytime someone mentions his dad, he has a complete meltdown. [Dad's deployed.] He has recently started biting his sister when someone mentions Daddy being gone. His dad means everything to him and it's so traumatic for him when he leaves. So that's not a funny one, just a hard one.

My son's funny triggers are when we attach his leash to his harness. He will hand us the leash and turn so we can attach it and then has a meltdown because we attached it. Also when he is on hte leash he meltsdown becasue he can't go hug strangers or explore the store indepndently. Sometimes, when it is just the kids and I, I let him explore before we shop.
Oh and this one is sweet. If he can't greet a baby and say "oohh", you know the tone the one moms and grandmas the world over use the first time they see the baby, he freaks and starts "screaming" and crying.

In Canada the Olympic theme song was something called I Believe. Remember, we hosted the Olympics in Vancouver...so this song was EVERYWHERE! My son could not tolerate it...too slow, too sad, too beautiful. To top it off, my daughter LOVES the Olympics and wanted to watch various events...guess which song was plastered into various commercials? He also reacts strongly to the musical stylings of Celine Dion, Disney Princess music, Whitney Houston...you get the idea...big and bold or the tra la la music.

AND, chips! The smell, the sound of people crunching on them, the sight of them on a plate...he cannot stand chips!
