My 4 year old Autistic son still babbles and his method of communication is either a scream or some makaton signing. He has multiple sensory issues and is constantly covering his ears and eyes but so far we had not figured out if he does this because its too loud, or if there is a noise he can hear but we cannot. Anyway, yesterday i was in Kmart and there was a presentation going on with the opening of the Kmart wishing tree for Xmas. Cut a long story short, my son covered his ears and began to cry. I bent down to him and he said "Too noise, go outside".
It was a huge achievement for us and of course we left everything and did as he asked.

I am so happy for you! That is such a big step!! More words will come, and I know this will be such a joy for you and your family. It really warms my heart to hear a child with ASD making such progression! Keep up the good work, and you and your family will be in my prayers!

That is excellent!!! Just wondering if you have thought of trying the picture card communication system, otherwise known as PECS? We have started implementing it with our 2 1/2 year old son recently and I think it is great, it gives kids that have limited vocab or non-verbal to communicate, and the best thing is that when he uses the card to ask for something, i get it, hold it up and say the word and he has started saying some of the things, like last night he was saying 'apple' and just now he said 'chip', so I know just how excited you are. If you are interested check out www.pecsaustralia.com, they have some great stuff. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.
I have also had my son on the gfcf diet for about 3 months with some improvement.

Thank you all for your comments. I also wanted to share with you that although my son does not speak, he is able to sing. I have not come across this before but its amazing to watch as he takes a microphone (his Dad is an entertainer/singer) and sings complete songs. Not just nursery rhymes, but actual songs. He listens to a song just once while flicking his fingers near his face to the beat. Then he will replay that song and sing it word for word and in tune..Its incredible. Hard for outsiders to believe a child who does not speak in words or sentences, can sing. We have recorded him and hes on You tube singing Hallelujah with my husband

GOOSEBUMPS! You gave me goosebumps!

My son used to have horrible meltdowns, and when he finally was able to say, me no like that....ohmygosh! We still have meltdowns, but nothing nearly as severe.

HOORAY X 100,000!!!

Sheila

PS: What a beautiful Christmas gift!
