I was wondering who had purchased/rented tubs for home births, what was your experience, how much did you spend, was it worth it? Please let me know what you think, I need all the info I can get!

Well my midwife had suggested a water trough would work just as good, and it did. It was around $130, not too bad, but then again i bought mine at a local feed store. i worked great for support and i get to use it for my next!!!

I purchased my birthing pool from a company called birthing pool in a box! YEP all in one box!

There are different options that will suit most budgets, great advice is also given on the site.

My husband found it easy to put up (it is inflatable) and my mother managed to empty, but i recommend you do get the pump as she said it would have been much harder.

Birthing pools for me are brilliant, i used one at the hospital with my daughter (first born) and knew i had to have one at home when i planned my home birth. I have stored it safely and lent it to my friend who just purchased a new sterile liner for it.

Although neither of my two children were born in the water (i decided on both times to get out - must be a strange pregnant thing i do!) i just loved having them and it is such a relaxing experience and i also believe played a great part in my having NO pain relief during my second labor (other than a tens which i used prior to getting into the pool!)

Perfect and i can highly recommend.

Good luck :-)

Courtenay this is my first home birth too. I have found a few websites on water birth stuff. I live in Australia though so maybe we would have different needs etc.
If you are using a private midwife they should be able to help you. My midwife said buying a $200+ pool would potentially be a waste of money when you can buy fairly decent kiddy pools for less that if you don't use can be given to the kids and if you do it didn't cost so much so throwing it out wont be that big a deal.

She also said hiring one is sometimes just as expensive, because the cost plus a liner can exceed $200. Basically she also mentioned the most important fact which is, once your in labor and reach that second stage you want to be free to get into what ever position feel the best without feeling like you have to be in the water because you spent so much money and effort making it happen.

I have ranted enough now lol!! I hope any of this is somehow useful, I just kept seeing your post and no one replied so I felt bad for you :)
Good Luck with everything
