Just wondering my lil girl seems to be showing the signs shes ready for solids but refuses to eat the farex rice cereal. I know this is a good source of iron important for their growth but will it hurt if i just leave it out. How did you go with new food?

We did, all sorts of veggies and fruits witha small amount of rice cereal for a while hes now 5 months and we cut out the cereal all together, remember he still gets vital nutrients from breast milk or formula

by the way...my older two kids are 13 and 16...actually they will be 14 and 17 in a matter of weeks....neither has any food allergies or anything. Again...I think it is up to the baby....what they are interested in...some are slower to be ready for foods than others, and up to the parent. No big deal! ;-D

Really it all depends upon you, and your child. I have two teenagers and a 5 month old. My philosophy has always been that if they are showing interest in food, i.e. grabbing for your food, mimic you eating, etc, then they are ready for food. With my 5 month old we started giving her solids about a month ago now and she is quite happy with them....both fruits and veggies. I fed my 13 year old son rice/breastmilk bottles at 8 weeks old (on advice from the dr), but my oldest daughter never liked cereal so I didn't feed it to her. My 5 month old daughter is not a huge fan either...so she only gets cereal about 1x-2x a week. Currently she is eating solids about 2-3 times a day. I still breastfeed at night and in the early morning....and about 2 other times a day...she also gets juice bottles (mixed 1/2 juice and 1/2 water). The rule of thumb with juice is 1 oz per month of age. I know for younger and/or first time moms it is always a worry about when, what, or how much...but again...it is really up to you and your baby. My children's pediatrician says that my little one is doing great. Also....didn't hurt the older two as they are both happy, healthy, and well adjusted teens! ;-D Relax! Enjoy this time....do what feels right!

We skipped the rice cereal due to the fact that she is getting 1tbsp of rice for every 1tbsp of formula in her bottle (per the pediatrician due to her GERD). She has bananas in the morning, a veggie for lunch and for dinner she has a veggie and then a fruit for dessert.

you don't need to start solids as the boxed cereals. if you are having rice at supper one day you can blend some of that up (with plenty of water), same with oatmeal, potatoes or many of the other foods you eat at your meals your baby can also have... keeping in mind that it is real food and not instant, prepackaged high sugar/sodium etc.

my son has already had rice, yams and avocado, it is easy to prepare and freeze. for the first while babies are all about texture and flavour so it is a good time to introduce all different sorts of foods.

if you or your family has a history of allergies be mindful of the foods you will introduce and how soon you will introduce one food after the other.

I am srongly against processed food for babies so no rice cereals here... I am taking it slowly but my baby is having no problem. So far, she's had: avocado, pear, apple, sweet potato, artichoke heart, egg, plain yogurt and banana.

When my daughter was 6 weeks old she started foods, she would not eat that rice or oatmeal stuff either so i went stright to solids and she is great she loves her food. She is now 5 months old and eats morning and night and about to eat afternoons.

i would just mix the veggies with the cereal. that way she gets the best of both worlds in one sitting.

I agree with Katie. Also, if you are worried about what to try, I would talk to your baby's doctor.

because of preasure from family members I tried to start weaning my eldest child at 4 months but she didnt seem to want the baby rice, so I tried her again and again, but she still didnt seem interested so I decided myself that she would start weaing at 6 months instead.. This time I didnt even try her with the rice and just started her on sweet vegetable purees like sweet potato, or swede and carrots and built it up from there.... Either your child doesnt like the rice or she may not be ready to start the weaning process yet, thats up to you to decided though... whatever you decide good luck...

Rice cereal is not important at all, its empty food, if you like, cut up some apple, banana, cook some some carrot, and see if she likes to pick that up and eat it! Good luck!

You do not have to do rice cereal if you do not want to. The only reason why it is suggested to do rice cereal is for practice on the babies part. It's a texture thing. With my oldest I started with Veggies, carrots. Never did cereal with him. Rice cereal also constipates most babies, where as orange veggies usually do not. For the twins however I did do cereal. William is on rice cereal as he tolorated it great. No constipation or anything. Nathaniel is on oatmeal as the rice cereal constiapted him HORRIBLY. Poor boy was plugged up for 5 days ater just 2 days of cereal. Good luck in whatever you choose to do. She is your baby and you know best

I would not just skip. Rice cereal is soo easy to digest and some baby food is not. Baby gets use to digest cereal first then it is not soo hard on them to start digesting food. If you are going to skip rice cereal I would atleast use a different cereal first. (barley, oat, w/e...I like organic cereal)
