Does your toddler have an obsession?

My daughter is obsessed with kitties. It started with a real live kitty. (Our cat). Then it became noticing every kitty everywhere. Then it became every stuffed animal, sticker book, or regular book she picked out was kitty. THEN she discovered the talking tom kitty app on the itouches and phone. Oh, and might I mention we showed her icanhascheezburger once and now every time we get on the computer she thinks it's to show her ki-ki's.

So what's your kids obsession?

Trashcans.

Took him to the zoo for the first time this past weekend. He's currently 27 months old. While he asked to get into the pens with the animals he noticed, particularly ones with water, what he was most fascinated with were the trashcans. When we first got there and he saw the first trashcan, he just started repeating, "Trash cans are not a toy" over and over. Later, there was peacock standing by one of the trashcans, and about 5 times I was like, "Look Nick, a peacock!". His response was to look at me and matter-of-factly, "Mama, trash can", while patting the side of the trash can. When it was time to go, we gave up on keeping him away from them and allowed him to pick up leaves and run to the next trashcan to throw them away. There were lots of trashcans so it was a quick and easy way to get him to walk to the exit. Took him to a hockey game on Sunday, and again, he just kept trying to find a reason why we should go throw something in a trashcan. Even at people's houses, he just wants to throw something, anything, away.

Adam's Obsessions:

My son has had several obsessions but none have overlapped. From the age of 1-2 yrs old he was obsessed with Little Einsteins particularly with classical music and instruments. At this age he did not use many words to speak but could recite several episodes word for word, repeatedly and could even name & classify many instruments. He was also able to name the instrument by merely hearing it play on a cd or radio. From the age of 2-3 he became obsessed with Thomas the Engine and all the characters from the show. He knew everything and anything about the series from the names of each  character train to using British lingo in his vocabulary. This expanded into an interest in real trains where he was solely interested in reading, playing with, and watching movies and shows about trains. At the age of 3 is where the obsession with Sea Life/Marine Life began.

This has been the longest obsession; he is now almost 6 years old. This obsession is still growing strong. I can't even figure out how to explain the intense and extensive knowledge my son has with this topic. It has controlled his every thought to the extent that he strongly believes he is whatever sea animal he chooses to be on any given day. He is mostly fascinated by Killer Whales. He can tell you anything there is to know about them from their personality to what they eat to where they can be found. He can name every species including whales, sharks, dolphin, fish, coral reef facts, and so on. It's insane. Interesting but insane. He speaks of nothing else and relates real life events to sea life. For example if he doesn't like someone they are a shark and if he likes you and you treat him nicely you are a dolphin or mermaid. If he's a whale than whatever he is eating is "krill", because that's what whales eat. He switches from creature to creature on a weekly to monthly basis. Last week it was the Oarfish. These days he's obsessed with Octonauts, calls us all by character names and got obsessed with Giant Spider crabs after seeing one episode about them. He spends hours drawing them, watching them on you tube and pretending to be one. This is where the obsession becomes a problem with social interactions. Crabs "snap" their claws so he has gotten into trouble everyday in his first week of Kindergarten (public school God help us) because he keeps snapping at other kids. This means he is basically pinching other children. He has not been diagnosed because it has really been a challenge getting an eval but I'm almost positive my son has Asperger's.

Nothing escapes the fate of becoming her pretend "mommy," "daddy," and "baby ha" This includes squares of toilet paper, rocks and - most recently - deposits in the potty

My 3 year old is VERY girly and loves dresses. She refuses to wear jeans and will only wear dresses, skirts and if she has to wear pants, they have to be leggins...tight ones, not flaired. She will not wear sweat pants or pj pants to bed either, she pretty much only wears night gowns!

letters. When he sees one that he know he yells the name, and he sees them everywhere. He has started identifing the lowercase ones, and is calling all the ones he doesn't know "baby E". He loves them. He looks for letters puzzles, and finds them on his toys. It's so cute, when he says "Q", and W was "buba-woo" for the longest time.

My little ponies she owns a bunch of the books, wants to watch the episods we've over and over and over again every day instead of a new program. She constantly talks about ponies and knows all their names. Doesn't like to get dirty at all if she gets food on her hands I have to watch it over. She hates being dirty and will wash her hands way to much if you let her. Obessed with phones and remotes, anything with bottons, pianos.

my dughter is obsessed with.. hair... ugh, especially my hair. she takes a strand or 2 from the bottom of my ponytail, ouch! like the baby hairs that stick out. she has been doing this since she was like 3 or 4 months. and she will be 2 in november. she uses it to comfort her to sleep, or when she hurts herself bad enough for me to pick her up. when shes hungry. whenever she gets a chance. she takes a strand or 2 and puts it around her 2 fingers and sucks on it. she used to scour the floor looking for it when she crawled. i had to vaccuum all the time. if she sees it on the side of the tub during bathtime, she goesfor it. it is discusting lol. i have never allowed her to do it, but she stil tries every chance she gets. she only does it to her daddy or me. i HATE it and nothing i can do will get her to stop. grrr... ive even thoguht about shaving my head! i hope she stops it soon it drives me crazy!

Elmo, Dora the explorer and Kittys especially. Every time we leave the in-laws house she has a fit crying " Itty, Itty" ( her word for kitty) and cries until we are home because she thinks the kitty is hers. Now every cat she sees she freaks out saying itty and chases after it.

My 20 month old goes crazy for trucks (which in his mind is anything on wheels). He cant say motorcycle very well so he just makes a motor sound with his lips when he sees one of those. When we drive in the car he spends the whole time pointing out every other car on the road yelling truck! truck! truck! I'm sure next week it will be something new. I love watching his little mind work and how he gets so excited. What a great age! :-)
