Hi all I am wondering how many words your child was saying at around 18 months old and what are the most words said...my 18 month old says mum, bub, car and yesterday came out with Trin (her cousin's name). She is booked in to see a speech therapist but she doesn't want to talk. she is quite happy to do things without talking

For all of you moms who have toddlers not talking yet... you're not alone! We just went for our 18 month check up yesterday and have to go back in 3 months for some speech evaluation for my twin boys. They are starting to show some interest in talking, but haven't come out with any clear specific words. They just point and babble. Only clear words are ma and da. Sometimes we get "good", but that's about it. I read to them as much as possible, it's so frustrating because i think I'm doing something wrong.

my 18 month old was doing sooo well, but stalled between 15 and 18 months, he is only now starting to pick up words again, hes says mum, dad, bye dad, angel, doggies, audry, thank you, no, teddy... they are the main ones then other random words come out. i've knows kids that can say a lot more words at 18 months but i also know kids that say nothing

My daughter is saying hair, eyes, ears, tounge, teeth, toe, shirt, sippy, milk, puppy, kitty, mommy, dada, baby, mi mi for her aunt misty, d for her uncle daniel, na na, phone, cacker ( for cracker), dah ( for dora) mine, car, bum, outside, run, buh( for her cousins nickname bug) she shakes her head yes and no, and says more, peese for please. to me i wish she was starting to say her ABC's and counting but i just have to realise that it will come in time and that i cant rush it, but at times i think that she needs to know more cause there are some kids her age that know alot more than she does. Just give it time some kids learn things a lot quicker than others and i have had to just realise that to, but at the same time she could know new things and have said them when no one was around and so she could say it soon, and like you said she doesnt want to talk when you take her to the speech therapist and is shying away. I hope that she will start to say more for you, and maybe in the next couple of weeks or couple of months her speech could really pick up and before you know it she is going to be talking all the time! i hope that you get the answers that you are looking for.

This is another one where there's a huge range of "normal". It's entirely normal for an 18-month-old NOT to be saying much yet. I think the pediatricians start to get worried if the kid doesn't say 20 words by age 2, or something like that.

My 18-month-old, who is my 2nd daughter, says "mama", "dada", "juice" (which means any drink), "bye-bye", "uh-oh", "oh NO", "shoes", "nose", "eyes", "mouth", "boops" (boots), "apple" (any fruit), "out", "up", "help", "hat", "duck", "booty", and a tongue-smacking sound that means she wants to nurse.

my dd was only saying one word at her 15 mo check up. the ped said she expected 15-20 'clear words' by 18 mos. i kind of freaked. i just knew there was something wrong with her. she would only say 'dehhhhh'--for everything. then at about 17 mos, she started saying things like 'bob' 'moo', 'down'. she is 18 mos 1 wk and now has 34 words.

OMG freaking out now. My son is 18 months old and he says da, dada, hi, bye, nana, mama(once in a while), shoe, he ruffs like a puppy, says mmmm, for yummy. di, for drink. meow he just started but only when I do it first...

Most of y'all kids say A LOT more than mine does and I thought he talked a lot. He never stops babbling. He watches your baby can read and everything.. I'm totally upset about this and wondering if I need to talk to his doctor..

My daughter says about 10-15 words but prefers to babble. I told her doctor that when she went for her 18 mth check up and they told me that since she's not 2 yet that its not a big deal.

Every child is different. Some talk quicker and others walk faster. Maybe nothing is wrong with your daughter, she might not want to talk yet. My daughter Kiyana is a talker but it took her until she was 10 1/2 months to walk. If she isn't frustrated and neither are you then it's probably fine.

My son will be 18 months on the 23rd of this month and has an outstanding vocab! He can say mommy, daddy, nana, paw-paw, diaper, dog, book, cup, up, eggs, cookie, cracker, elmo, dora, boots, circle, apple, car, ball, bat, where it go, block, night night, bath, paper, color, milk, no, stop, nose, eye, knee, elbow, toes, butt, baby, uh oh, trash, stick, sticker, outside, bye bye, hello, hi and boobie...thanks to my husband. Lol. I don't know if he's just advanced or what? He was crawling at 5 months and walking at 9 months. He's already learning his colors and can differentiate the letter O and many objects other kids his age cannot. It's crazy to think how fast our little ones learn, because this time last month he could only say about 1/3 of these words.

My little girl seems to have great receptive language but doesn't have as much vocab as her older brother did at the same age. I reckon she clearly says 10 words, but babbles non-stop and often uses tears and whinging to get what she wants...a bit of a drama queen! I'm a little worried, but then she seems bright and with her other milestones, like learning to walk, she's seemed to take her time and then go from crawling to running with no step in between. I guess I'm hoping she'll be the same with her speech.

I wouldnt worry about what your children are saying or not saying.. they understand a lot more than what they can communicate with others. My first daughter spoke loads but couldnt pronounce words properly when she was younger used to call me mi mi or mamod instead of mammy, but hey I used to love it, made me different from everyone else, and I suppose its what makes your child different too. they will sharp figure it all out, my first child is so intellegent its unbelievable but sometimes she still gets words wrong but with practice it will come, thats all they need practice... if they say something and its not correct then just correct it by repeating it for them, then will be more likely to correct it themselves that way... but dont worry too much... if they need extra help then try to encourage them by naming everyday items which they come into contact with... or i dunno if this works but people think that if children eat chunky food it encourages them to develop their speach... if your child is going to nursery at age 3/4 and still cant talk then maybe start to worry but not at this stage...

Hi, I think it is quite normal for her at this stage to do things without talking. For the fact that she mentioned words like "mum, bub" etc shows that she does not have speech problems. My 18months old can make up a line like "Mumma or mummy stand up, i want water, Barney, Daddy, Nanny" and lots more. I know that with time she will pick from people around her. Take care

My son is very talkative. He was born Dec 8,2009 and talks a lot of "jabba-jabba-this," but he says Mama, Nana, Dada, Car, truck, bird, Anth, Matt, Neke (his siblings names), Vada (our dogs name), fish, wawa (water) and a bunch of other almost recognizable words. My suggestion is just to talk to her all the time, explain everything you are doing and talk to her like she is a child not a baby. :)

My son is 18 mon. and he says thank you, daddy, mommy, bye, hi, apple, Minnie, ready, set, go and then throws a ball, please, more, yay, eye, woof, ball, he understands everything! His 4 yr. old sister tells him to say words and he repeats them the best he can, he repeats every word you say, everything you tell him to do he does, Isaiah go get me a book, or a diaper, or a toy and he does it, go throw this out, but his sister on the other hand didn't talk until her 2nd birthday, we thought she was going to need speech therapy, now she talks non stop, counts and sings songs. They even sing Twinkle Twinkle together and Isaiah tries to say Toodles (Mickey Mouse) He tries to say Mickey too. He just started saying mine today too.

My daughter says so much i dont have time to write it all. She will attempt to say any word we do. We have been doing flash cards with her for a few months now and i found that really helps. She puts together about 3 word sentences but only those close to her can understand what this means. We make her use her manners all the time and wont give in to her till she uses them. My sisters daughter is 2 months older and has decided to grunt instead of using all her words so everyone is different.

He'll say, mom, dad (picked that one up at day care) dog, thanks, milk, no, out, yucky, really, he even says "whats that" he can count to 3 and he makes a few animal noises I'm praying that putting him in daycare with kids his age will help him to do better with interacting with people.

Hi My son has just turned 18 months and I was questioning his speech also! At his 12 month check up pediatrics said he had an extensive vocabulary at 10 words.... between then and now he doesn't say as much, Most common words are mum, daddy, dan goo (thank you), bye, angel ( our cat) then randomly will say things like doggie, ayden (his name) audry (friends dog) , teddy, broom broom ( for car) etc but like I said these words he doesn't use all the time.

My 3 older children spoke well at 18 months old. However my youngest says Mum-mum, Dad (every so often), ooo-ooo (when imitating a puppy sound), and can shake his head no. He waves goodbye but I don't count that as a word. Otherwise he just makes his little baby babble sounds. He comprehends everything I say to him though so I think when he starts to talk, he will come out with a flourish of words.

I agree with Jaime...my son has several words that many would understand if he said: hello, hi, bye, up, more, dog, cat, book, mine, thank you, nose, eyes, giraffe, down, sissy, Shaunice (his sister's name), nana, papa, mama, no, yes (occasionally), there/over there--->but then many phrases and words only those close to him and familiar with what he is attempting to say: all gone, upstairs/downstairs, bubbles, etc. He has his big sister, but IDK when listing words that he can say it's one thing, and that is without listing them all, but when he is with other kids his age he still doesnt seem to speak quite as much as those only 1 month older...those not posting on this board. I am not too terribly worried at this point and his understanding far exceeds his spoken vocabulary so making me even less concerned.

I wonder how WELL these children with extensive vocabularies speak? My daughter has a whole repertoire of words and a few phrases she says.,.. that my husband and I can understand. However, strangers hearing her would probably only understand about 5 words (bye bye, daddy, no, me, and uh oh). So by what standards do we consider our tykes actually talking: when parents can understand or when anyone can understand? Depending on the definition, I could say she only says 5 words, or as many as 50 with some phrases. Big difference!

My 17 mo. old says around 5 - 7 words- up, go, bye, hi, mama, daddy and ought oh, she babbles all day long and talks constantly but I can't make out what it is. She understand everything I'm saying though. She goes to P/T for low tone and just started walking at 17 mo. They want her to have a speech eval. They don't think she is saying enough either so I would do it, it doesn't hurt it can only help!!

I have noticed that the children with siblings tend to speak sooner then only's. Of all the kids in the daycare my DD goes to only 1 actually says anything-& again-he has older siblings. Not concerned at all. Now a days if a baby isn't on the fast track people seem to jump to conclusions. If your baby can communicate its needs to you without actually speaking it doesn't have a major need at this time.

Cristina, my son is more like yours. He understands when we speak to him, but he babbles or doesn't say anything.

He makes lots of noises, like "yum!" when he eats and "ahhh" when he drinks and "ooooooooh" when he squeezes through a tight spot. But talking? Not so much. He says "Da" and "cuckoo" (my parents have a cuckoo clock), "gone-gone", "diaper", "Meow" (we have a cat), "tractor", and that's pretty much it. But he understands when we speak to him, so I'm not really worried.

And then I come on here and the other kids are speaking phrases and singing Bob the Builder??? Wow, seriously? Your kids are amazing!

Still, not worried... (said in a slightly concerned tone)

My twins still do tons of babbling, mostly to each other. One "talks" to the tv when he is watching cartoons. I'm starting to look into sending them to daycare part time just to be around other kids their age, maybe it will force them to learn to communicate with other kids, instead of with each other.

She is my youngest of 3 kids and everyone suggests that the other 2 do all the talking for her but this is not the case. my son sang Bob the Builder at 8 months old and we could understand what he was saying at 1, my middle child had 50 odd words in her vocabulary at the age of 1. my youngest (and there is 14 months between the younger 2) isnt interested in talking. My youngest doesn't point either however she can sit down with you and work puzzles out and put things in the right order. The speech therapist has said she is quite intelligent and has given some suggestions on getting her to talk but nothing seems to be working. so any other suggestions?

My son's vocabulary kind of boomed this past month. He says Thank you, please, more, promise, yes, no, dog, hot dog (for Mickey Mouse) grandma, grandpa, mama, dada, outside, bye-bye, hi, Aiden (his name), Ellie & Kobe & Roxy & Wabi (all of the dogs in the our immediate families name), Nina (for his godmother), light, up, cookie, agua, milk, spongebob, monkey, hot, flowers, tree, plane, baby, ov oo (love you), night night, apple, horse, ball, car, truck, papa (food), shoes, brush, wash, bath, socks, pee-pee (when he needs his diaper changed) foochi (when he smells smelly feet), and probably a couple other words but thats all I could think of for now. He doesn't speak sentences or many phrases yet, but he's always babbling away! People always tell me that he talks a lot for his age. He's my 1st child so I don't really know what the norm is. But that's my input on what's going on as far as speech development for my 18 month old :) Try not to worry too much about it now, before you know he'll be talking your ear off and wish that he would just stay quiet for a few minutes every now and then!
