My son is refusing the bottle!

My son will be 1 on Dec. 13th. Yesterday and today, he has thrown his bottle away after drinking only 2 ounces. Then he cries, because he's hungry. It doesn't happen every time, but did about 5 times in 3 days. Is this normal? He's eating solids like a champ, and we're starting to introduce him to homo milk. I don't know what to do. Is this him weaning himself? Or could it be because he's not feeling well? He has a cold, and about four teeth are working their way out of his poor gums. Also, every child at church seems to have the chicken pox, so maybe he caught it, too. At first I thought that he didn't like the taste of the cows milk, but he continued even after I stopped putting a bit in the formula. I don't know what to do with him. Suggestions, please!

He's probably ready for a sippy cup. My son was doing the same thing around 7 months so we started giving him a sippy cup instead and he switched over seamlessly on his own. He did the same thing with the pacifier - one day he just stopped taking it.

I was told that they only need 20 oz of dairy product that can be milk to slice of cheese. You should start trying a sippy cup since hes throwing the bottle it might be a perfect time to introduce it.

Sounds like he's teething to me. My son will be 1 on Dec 31st. and he wants nothing to do with his bottle. Stuffy nose, fever, molars poking through. He had 8 teeth poke through ALL at once when he was 6 months and he did the saaaaame thing then.

Could be time to wean off the bottle...maybe he isn't getting enough flow. I weaned my son in one day! He is going awesome on his new straw cup and I'm so proud of him. My son won't drink much at a time, just in little bits

Lulu is turning 1 on Dec 30..He's only on the bottle in the night..During the day he used to refuse and it's been two months now..my Dr. advised me to introduce daily milk and add a bit of some salt to taste.

My DS turns 1 on the 18th of December. He's been off the bottle since 11 months. Refused it all together. I still offer it to him, but its a waste of time and money. I asked the doctor what I should do and he said it was ok to slowly start introducing cowsmilk to replace the formula he's missing out on. He's now getting 2 sippycups of milk each day and is fine with it.

I have heard of bubs this age going off the bottle for a few days and then going back to it again. Hopefully its just a stage for you :o)

Does he not like the whole milk in the sippy cup and have you tried the sippys that have spouts more like bottels?

Sounds like weaning to me!! My 1 year old just pretty much did the same thing. She started drinking less and less in the bottle. Now, she drinks her milk from a sippy cup and drinks it straight down. Try offering the milk in a sippy cup and see what happens!

my boy comming up 1 too,
the more solids they eat the less drink of milk they need as long as he is having his breckie dinner and tea theres no need for him to have milk.
saying that mine is the opposit luv food and wont have a bottle im still breastfeeding. but he is my 5th child so i think by now i no what im talking about.
babies go off food when teething too, and cows milk tends to constipate a baby too. try a cup if he wont drink it from a bottle. gl with your baby hope i helped.

my son did the same thing , he was also teething sometimes too lol .. I just started giving him a sippy cup for about 2 -3 weeks now and he hasnt had a bottle since .. I certainly dont want to force the bottle on him and then have to break him from it later so this worked perfectly lol ..When my sons teething he always drinks less , he never drank as much as most babies , but he is happy , healthy and has lots of wet diapers which means hes hydrated so i dont worry . If you are too concerned you can always ask your doctor ... best of luck :D

My two twins do not want the bottle anymore either except for their 5:30 am bottles. During the day they drink out of sippy cups now.
Could it maybe an ear infection? I have heard that the sucking could cause a lot of discomfort?

when is it ok to change over some bottles to milk? She will be 1 on 12/20. She doesn't really want the bottle either...but she'll take about 2-3 oz 2-3 times a day....

My son just turned one on 12/3 and he did the EXACT same thing. I just tried not to force it, not only because he would throw the bottle and get upset, but if he's eating the solids and now the milk, you should be good. My dr. said that once you introduce milk, they only need about 16 oz a day, far less than the formula requirements. I would say, just wait it out a bit. He'll definitely eat when he's hungry, but with the teething and everything else going on, he'll get back to "normal" whatever that is for a 1 year old! Good Luck!

my son turned 1 last Sunday. He drinks water out of a sipper cup, and I have been weaning him off formula and onto milk for the last 3 weeks (introducing 50ml/25% of milk/week, and this week he is onto 100% milk). He too is not wanting most of the bottle during the day, but he also doesn't want water,or foods that require chewing at the moment too (he only has 2 teeth!!!) He is also putting his fingers in his mouth when he has food in there. I think in his case it is that he is teething. I think it's like adults, when we feel pain we don't want to do anything that makes the pain worse. I've been giving my son infant panadol at night before his milk bottle, and we sit and have quiet time on the lounge when he has the bottle. I try to encourage him to have a drink every 20 mins and he does but only about 30ml. This means he has a later bed time at the moment, but he is going to bed after drinking about 150ml. It's not as much as he usually drinks, but it's something.

I betcha it his teeth. Even a breastfed baby will refuse to nurse when his/her teeth are hurting. It may be easier to give a sippy cup, and if you are still wanting to use the bottle, try again later.Good luck.

Thanks, everybody. I tried the sippy cup idea - he didn't care for it much. I increased his solid intake, but wasn't sure how to make him drink enough. (He'll hold a bottle, but not a sippy cup, and dribbling fluid into his mouth with a cup is so slow) But yesterday a tooth poked out (you were right, Jamie) and now he's keen on the bottle again. I'm sticking with feeding him a solid snack in the afternoon instead of a bottle, but he gets the other regular ones. I'm with you, Kim. I can't wait until he's done with the bottles - such a pain to wash!

he is telling u its time for a sippy cup, you got to listen to what they want even though they cannot talk, my daughter is doing the same thing so i would put the rest of the milk in her sippy cup she holds it herself and she drinks the rest, also try giving more sold food and less of the bottle and see what happens.

Mine did the same thing for about two weeks. He would drink 2 ounces then push the bottle away and cry. I found it was his teething bothering him and now he is back to normal eating 6-8 ounces a bottle. He drinks is down to one formula bottle and the rest are of whole milk.

My boys don't eat their bottles either, they are down to 4oz in the morning and 4oz before bed. And even sometimes they don't drink all of it. They are eating mostly solids, I'm trying to wait to give them milk till I get their doctors ok, only because they had problems with formula and are on Similac Alimentum. But I think it just makes it easier on us to get them off of bottles. I can't wait, I'm tired of washing them! Looking back now, I don't know how I managed when they were newborns, going from 9 bottles a day for two boys down to 2 bottles a day is so nice lol.

I'd say that he's weaning himself. He wants more solids and less formula. Take it as a good thing! You won't have to buy formula anymore and you won't have to deal with weaning him off. Aren't they supposed to be off the bottle AND sippy cup by 14months? That's what my pediatrician AND WIC told me.
