It might be the type of cup that he doesn't like. I had the same problem at first. The one I got has handles, its no spill and he seems to love it now. Its a Nuby. He still doesn't like the straw ones, he cant figure it out. But with the Nuby the nipple is similar to a bottle. Good luck!

Walmart sells the training sippy cups..Its soft like a nipple but shaped like spout of a sippy cup..My daughter wouldn't take anything else but that when we first started her on them..Now she'll drink out of any kind of sippy cup

Sommer try the tommee tippee sippy cups they are 100% leak proof. My daughter has them and she can throw them down and everything and they do not leak at all and they have a soft nipple on them.

Hi Rebecca! My son is 1 as well, and he doesn't drink from a cup. We skipped sippy cups and actually got him a straw cup. Babies seem to go to the straw cups faster than regular or sippy cups b/c they already have good suction, and they don't have to lay down or tilt their head back.
Hope this helps!

my son also would not tip the regular sippy cups far enough to get anything out of them, we use the straw sippy cups with the wide straw, i think it is nuby brand. he took to it right away and doesn't have to tip the cup.

My son's been on a straw cup since 8 months, and we weaned him off the bottle at 11 months so now he only drinks from his straw cups always. He just turned 1 on the 31/12 and he'll drink out of a cup no worries if we hold it but he is toooo shaky for it yet. We'll keep trying though until one day he decides to grab it and holds it for himself with no spilling!

try the nuk beginner ones ... the nipple is still soft like a bottle and there is no stopper which makes for a mess but worked wonders for my daughter she turned one on dec 20 and has been using a cup for 4 months

Cup? As in sippy cup or a regular cup? One year old is really early to drink from a regular cup without support from an adult. My son drinks from cups with a straw. He has since he's been 6 months old.

Its funny, I give my baby's breastmilk from a cup at birth. S
Give him a cup in the bath, kids love to drink bath water and it helps him learn without making a mess of himself or the floor.
I give Drew a drink bottle that she drinks water from, the same as the older kids use. After 5 kids I've found you don't really need to use all the fancy expensive cups.
If they get use to tipping up a drink bottle or sippy cup, then they will transition to a cup more easily. I also found the disposable sip cups are good for small hands. Handle are OK, but very different to a cup, just one more skill to learn.
Don't expect him to master this skill over night, he might be busy doing other stuff, like walking/climbing/teething etc...

My daughter was having problems with her first sippy cup when we first switched her over a few months ago, for the very same reason. We tried the tilty cup, which really helped her learn how to drink. (http://www.tiltycup.com/). It lets kids drink from a cup at the same angle they would use to drink from a real cup. Now, she is able to drink from any sippy cup, though we still use the Tilty cup at meal time to hopefully teach her how to drink from a real cup faster. You should look into it! :)

My son is 1 yr old too and he too don't drink properly from cup and even sippy cup... So I am giving him drinks through bottle... I think baby learn at their pace... So I am not trying or pushing him for that. I know he will learn when he wants. But I keep trying every few days...

My son gets put in the high chair a lot with his sippy cup so his elbows are supported and raised... then he does well. I also keep it really full all the time, it's heavier but he doesn't have to tip as much... I also lay him on his back sometimes to help him drink it. As long as your little one doesn't struggle with ear infections since laying on his back could cause fluid build up in the ear canal...

My daughter HATED sippy cups! At 8 months, she grabbed my water, which had a straw in it. Brilliant! So, we started using a straw with her. We love leak-proof straw cups by Playtex. And if we're in a pinch, she'll take a straw in any cup.
She's moved on to sipping from a real cup, but it inevitably makes a mess as she can't hold it herself. So, we'll continue to keep the straws around while she sips from our water glasses.

Have you tried giving him a sippy cup with handles? We had the same problem with our children and thats what we ended up using and it worked

My little girl wasn't getting the concept of tipping up a sippy cup since she was mostly bf. I started using the cups with the straws in them and she does a great job drinking from those. We will work on open cups next, but for now, I am happy that she is drinking from a normal cup and not a bottle. Blessings!

My daughter has the same problem but she is very independent and loves to feed herself. I bought her a drink bottle designed for bubbies with a straw in it. This way she can drink herself as she doesnt need to tip it up. I figure once she builds more strength in her wrists we will try with the cup again.

get the kind with a straw, my daughter took to it at nine months. Her two year old brother didn't like it and kept leaving it around and she just picked it up and figured it out. With her brother I had to lay him on the floor with his sippy cup to get him to see how it works and then it took forever for him to figure out the kind with straws that you don't tip up.

My daughter was the same with the bottle at first. So she would lay back when she saw us coming with bottle. Then we went to the two handle sippy cup. She tried to sit up and drink but always got mad cause she couldn't get it up far enough. So it has now been a week since 1st Birthday and I can gladly say she is on a regular sippy cup and can sit up and know just how far to go up so she won't fall back. Give it do time he will get it after a few tries.

My son finds tipping the sippy cup up difficult, too. But I've been snapping my fingers above his head when he's trying to get something out of the sippycup, and then he looks up, and something comes into his mouth! Then he's like, "Oh!" and drinks like that for a minute or so, and then he forgets again. I think he'll figure it out yet.

try a sippy cup that has two handles comming from the sides. my kids seems to realize " o hey i should grab these and tilt back a little" with that kind of sippy cup first, and just let it come naturally. dont let anyone pressure you with dates and guidelines.

Hi I have b/g twins that turned 1 on dec 9. My daughter does quite well with a beginner sippy cup. My son on the other hand does not. He's just not ready. I plan on offering the sippy cup at least with one meal a day so he can get familiar with itBut Im not going to push the issue just yet

Hi again ;)
I am just trying to figure out developmentally where your son is at :)
Will he hold his bottle and tip it?
Does he bring toys up to his mouth to chew on, have finger food etc

Hi there :)
Might be a bit early to drink from an open cup? we have tried it a few times as an experiment (with water) and ended up drenched ha ha.
I have let my son (just 1yr) drink from my cup but I hold it and I only offer a tiny bit in the bottom.
For independent use, I use a no spill spout, with handles to hold - its tommee tipee or nuby I think. the handles are great to help him tip it up and no leaks mean he doesn't get wet and I don't have a mess on the floor lol:)
Or you could try a sipper bottle with a straw insert.
I have one of these for out and about - it's a different action as they don't need to tip them just hold upright and suck.
Have fun and happy holidays xx
