Hi i'm a first time mum with a 4 week old baby and suffering with these sleepless nights. I had a rough pregnancy with sever hyperemesis in and out of hospital. I have lost 2 stone in the 4 weeks since birth but eating well. I am breastfeeding every 3 hours (more often when he's really hungry baby). Also had rough birth and lost 3ltr of blood, since birth i have had a few episodes where i have passed out in the street. Any tips anyone in managing all the demands a baby has on you?

I did not have a rough pregnancy or delivery, and the sleepless nights are killing me. My baby girl is one month, and I am totally beat down. When someone lets me sleep during the day, I can not fall asleep, or can not fall asleep long. It is like my brain is wired to wake every two hours.

I just had my third baby, and my advice is not the popular thing these days. I co-sleep, which is just keeping the baby in bed with me. After struggling with my first baby not sleeping well at night for a year, I finally couldn't take it anymore and starting lying down with her in my bed, and we both started sleeping well. With this baby I started keeping him in my bed from the start, and he has been a great sleeper at night. It works because I can tell right when he starts to wake up, and can start nursing right there and then, and he usually doesn't wake up fully, and neither do I, and we both typically fall right back to sleep. Not to mention the baby sleeps better because he feels more secure, he can tell you are close, he hears you and feels your warmth.
Just something that I have learned from child number 1 to child number 3.

i know what you both mean. after birth i lost 2L's of blood, went into theatre and couldnt look after alexander til he was 2days old by myself. i still have dizzy spells and have bumped into the walls a couple of time because of blackouts. when alex sleeps through the night i continuously wake up waiting for him :) its a bit frustating but if you get your partner/husband to get up change the baby and then come a get you to feed you get that 5mins extra and then get him to wrap the baby and put them back to bed theres another 5-10mins. just try what you can and you might find something that works. good luck

Hi Michelle, my story is very similar to yours. I also suffered hyperemesis and was in & out of hospital. I never knew "morning sickness" could be so bad.I lost 11 kgs in 8 weeks. Fortunatley I started to feel better around 16 weeks. I also lost alot of blood with the birth and suffered dizzy spells as a result. My little girl Olivia is almost 8 weeks now. It is definatley a challenging experience. Olivia is really smiling now which makes the sleepless nights a little easier to deal with. The smile just melts your heart. I am told most babies are sleeping through the night by this stage - but Olivia really seems to love her food and is still waking up every 3 to 4 hours. I am looking forward to the day when she decides to have a full nights sleep. I try to rest during the day but cannot seem to get to sleep - I guess we just need to hang in there until things get better. Good luck with your little one.
