Hey guys! I was just wondering about other peoples experiences with the return of their menstrual cycles. I have never had a heavy flow during my period, but now that I've started my first period after delivery it's really heavy. I've heard that it will be like this from here on out- once you have a baby your periods are heavier. Is this true??! I certainly hope not!

I had my son in August 2011 and it took about 3 months for my period to return. It was the heaviest period of my life. I was soaking through super pads and super plus tampons every 2 1/2 to 3 hours plus it lasted for 7 1/2 days vs the normal 4 days. Right now as I type I'm in the middle of my second full blown period. It's still really really heavy and I have a major migraine but no cramps. Hopefully this one won't go beyond 7 days and I am keeping my fingers crossed for some relief when I get my IUD placed at my next dr. appt.

I bled for the full six weeks after I had my baby girl on December 9th. On the 7th week my doctor put in an IUD and I started having the worst cramps I'd ever felt, and to top it off I started bleeding again. My daughter is now 3 months old and I just stopped bleeding a week ago, when I got the IUD taken out due to complications. I bled for 3 months, and it was awful :( So I have no idea when I'm going to get my period again, or what it's going to be like.

I had my baby on Dec. 8th and bled for about 3 weeks. A month I only had cramps and spotted......two weeks later after I had the Mirena put in place (IUD) I've gotten my period which is really heavy. I normally only bleed 3-4 days max, but I'm on my 8th day!!!!! Doctor said with the IUD, my periods can light or not have any at all. I just hope so! I hate being on my period this long! grrr!

I have been bleeding really heavy for 10 weeks now, since baby, and my doctor does not seem to think it is a big deal.

A womans work is never done lol

Well, I was worried about my bleeding after Khloe was born. I bled for 6 1/2 weeks after her birth. My doctor didn't seem too concerned as long as the amount wasn't enough to soak a pad in an hour or less. The bleeding would slow alot and I would think I was done but then it would come back later in the day heavier than it had been in a couple of days. It was back and forth that whole 6 1/2 weeks then it stopped for a week (I started low dose bc 6 weeks after giving birth) and came back for about 5 days and then stopped and hasn't returned since. I thought the 5 day bleeding could've been a period but because I'm breast feeding exclusively and because my bleeding had been eratic from the start I can't be certain. With my 1st child it was a whole different experince. I bled for only about 3 1/2 weeks after birth. I breast fed My daughter for the 1st month and a half and then about a week after I stopped breast feeding my period came back. (I wasn't on any birthcontrol) It was about the same length as before, the cramps were a bit worse, & Thankfuly they were WAY more regular than they'd ever been. Like clock work every 30 days. It seems like every women is different and the bleeding after each birth is different. I don't really know but if your Doctor dosen't seem upset by it and you aren't bleeding through more than a pad or tampon (if you've been cleared to use them agian) then I'd try not to worry.

I bled for the straight 6 weeks and still haven't had my period but I'm breastfeeding. My dos said it could take up to a year to level out (that's hormones and all). But I'm a little worried about the first one now. I'm a heavy cramper and bleeder so if it's any worse I'm afraid I might bleed out (the last part is a joke) but it's not going to be pretty if it's worse than a normal period for me. AND I can't just call in sick, I'm a Marine so I'd have to go to Sick Call and there is NO WAY they'd send me home for a period. This should be interesting.

No, what you are describing does not sound like the period. It takes a few months before your menstrual cycles return, especially if you are breastfeeding. All that blood was not a mentrual cycle. It was just all the stuff coming out from not having one at all for 9 months. A doctor or nurse can explain it all better, though. It is a mystery to me, too. For my 2nd child this time, it seemed like I was bleeding after my C-Section a lot more and longer, like the whole 6 weeks post-partum. I have not had my first real menstrual cycle yet, and it will return normally, eventually, but not so heavily as you say. I think it will be slow at first, if I remember from my first child 3 years ago, correctly, after your almost done with breastfeeding. Thanks! Let me know what others think! : )

Some of you seem so lucky. My son was born Dec. 11 and in the begining of January I had and IUD put in to insure I wouldnt get pregnant again right away and I have not quit bleeding. My son is almost 3 months old and I can only count 2 days that I havnt bled at all. My doctor doesnt seem concerned but sometimes I get the worst cramps. Some of my contractions while I was in labour didnt even hurt this bad. I dont know if I should go to another doctor or just tough it out.

after my baby i bled for 3 weeks, then went for a month and a half without one, when mine came back it was the same as my periods before pregnancy, if not shorter, usually 4 full days i was luck if it was 3 days total.

my daughter is almost 7 weeks, i bleed for 5 weeks, and i haven't started my period yet. with my first two kids my period was heavy for the first 2 maybe 3 months then it got really really light. i would only have my period for 3 days and i could get away with just using a panty liner.

I am breastfeeding my second baby born 15th Dec and have had a period (she is now nearly nine weeks). I didn't notice heavier periods after having my son, just the same as before. But I did bleed for nearly five weeks after having both of them and then had a light period two weeks after that, then back to normal, but then again my periods are fairly light anyway. I was disappointed after having my son to find that exclusively breastfeeding doesn't necessarily stop your periods, I find it a little scary to think that I could get pregnant again so soon after having my wee girl.

Hi everyone :)

I bled for 4 weeks after having my son, but I can't remember when I got my first period after that ... I think it was 2 weeks later.

With my new baby, I bled for just over 3 weeks and then 2.5 weeks later, I got the heaviest period I've EVER had! Seriously, it felt like I was hemorrhaging! Every move I made, I was flooding, at one stage I was wearing 2 Super pads at the front and 3 across the back! (felt like I needed a nappy lol) It was like that for 2 - 3 days and then subsided into what felt like a normal period. The cramps were worse than a normal period too.

Kristina my baby was born on December 17th too. I wouldn't stress about your period just yet ... unless maybe you really think you're pregnant.

Ok, now I'm worried. I haven't had one yet and I'm not breastfeeding! Josephine will be 2 months on the 17th. Maybe I should get a test????

With my first son, it was only heavier for a few cycles, then was actually lighter and shorter than before. Plus, I no longer got awful cramps like I used to. I haven't started again yet. I'm breastfeeding which sometimes delays things.
