My son is 9 and a half months and he's not walking or crawling yet. The dr says not to worry because a)boys are slower than girls and b)he's advanced in a LOT of other things, but a mom can't help but worry especially when I have my entire family breathing down my neck about it. Lol. I just wanted some input on different things I can do and also what age your children were. I put him on his bottom to play on the floor and he can get himself on his stomach about 50% of the time but the other 50% he can get one leg out from under him but not the other. Even then once he gets on his stomach he doesn't scoot or anything. Let me know what you all think please. Thanks.

he will accomplish these milestones when he is ready. But, if you want , and idea, you can try putting a toy just out of his reach, if he wants it bad enough he will crawl to it. Dont worry all children develope at their own pass!

I wouldnt worry about it some babies totally skip crawling and go straight to walking, If hes trying thats a step in the right direction anyway...Your son is an individual not a statistic so tell everyone to mind their business. My god daughter didnt crawl she tried but she gave up and went to walking. I personally was 16 months old when I started walking and im perfectly fine every baby is different NO WORRIES!!!!!!!!! When my son gets there I'm sure I'll worry about my son but for now hes only 9 weeks old lol Keep your head up.

My son is almost a year old and he still does not crawl. He walks with assistance and he army crawls to get where he wants to be, but like everyone is telling you, I was told as long as he is developing and still learning new things he is fine. He will get it eventually.

He'll get there! My daughter didn't crawl until 10 months and now, at 1 year and 3 weeks is cruising, but not quite walking yet. They all get there eventually!

My daughter never crawled. When she was about 9 months sche started to slide around on het bottom. Very funny!

she started walking at 18 months, so no worries!

My son was 17 months old before he started walking. Now he out runs everyone his own age and mine. Doctors may look into it if he hasn't started by 18 months.

Don't worry. Crawling isn't a necessary thing for babies to do. Some babies skip this step and go right to walking. My daughter was around 9 months when she started crawling & started walking around 11.5 months.

If you are worried, I'd take him in for an evaluation by a pediatric physical therapist or find out about Early Intervention services in your state (free services for babies 0-3). Both my kids were in physical therapy and occupational therapy -- and with my older daughter, I wish I had started earlier. Neither had anything seriously wrong, but therapy really helped them catch up with their friends, ease frustration, etc. The earlier you start, the less therapy you actually need. Babies really are amazing how fast they learn.

This is NOT to say there is anything wrong with your son!! An evaulation will either 1) assure you that he's on the right track or 2) give you a course of action. The goal of therapy is to get through it and set babies on their way!

Hope this helps.

I wouldn't worry if I were you. In fact, my daughter is also 9 1/2 mos. and not crawling or walking yet either. She can get to a sitting position by herself and go from sitting to hands and knees or tummy, but then she just gets mad because she can't figure out the rest. But in the last couple weeks she has started pulling herself up to standing by herself and walking holding on to my hands in the last couple days. I'm wondering if she's going to crawl at all at this point or just skip it. My son crawled at about 6 mos. but didn't walk until he was 13 mos. They all go at their own pace. But if you are worried that something might be wrong, most county health depts. offer a free developmental screening, all you have to do is request it!

I had my son's picture taken at a year old for our local paper and we were in a room with a fairly large group of 1 year olds and let me tell you each one was at a different stage in thier "cruising" abilities. Some were newly crawling, some were stable on thier feet and a lot were still wobbly or simply cruising. My son didn't crawl till he was 11 months but immediately after he was walking pretty confidently. They are all different, don't stress just enjoy the stage thier in!

I wouldn't worry yourself too much. My son is only four months but I remember that my nephew didn't start crawling until he was about 9 and a half months and when he finally did, he only crawled for about two weeks and only far enough to grab on to something and pull himself up....after that he was up and walking. So you just never know...every child is different. If your doctor doesn't seem to be worried about it, than I wouldn't either!

My son is 11 month old and only just started crawling a week ago. he just started doing it all of a sudden all babbies are different just keep putting him on the floor to explore he will figure out what he can do when he is ready, if he is your first child then that could be another reason as children like to copy of brothers and sisters. dont worry about it he will do it in his own time, once he relises he can do it he wont stop lol :)

Most babies hate tummy time but that is where they need to be to learn how to crawl. My son hated to be on his stomach at first but once they learn that this is the only way to move around they are good to go. As for hardwood floors, I had the same problem, I took off his diaper or put shorts on him so his knees didn't slide.

I freaked out too when mine wasn't crawling. She is 11 months now and just started crawling at 10.5 months. At 10 months she wasn't showing any signs of crawling--no scooting or anything. She wasn't even able to get herself to sitting position on her own. One day it just sort of clicked. Now she is crawling and pulling up all over the place. Don't worry! It will happen.

9 months is young to be walking, he will do it as his own pace... dont rush him and dont wish time on he will reach each milestone when he is ready. Just think by the time he is 2 he will be running around like mad!

[deleted account]

Try placing toys you know he likes just slightly out of his reach. He will work to get to it. It can be hard to do because they can get frustrated as they learn how to do this. But if everything is within hands reach there is no reason to crawl. This wont happen overnight but it's a good exercise to practice a few times a day - - not all day of course : )

My son is 9 1/2 months and looks like he has no intentions of crawling....i put him on his belly and he hates it and cries. His 7 mth old cousin can crawl. They all develop at different times.

I was starting to have the same worries! My son turned 9 months on July 2. My nephew is 4 months older then him and started to pull himself up onto furniture at 7 months, and fully walking by 9. My son will turn himself all around while sitting and he also gets the one leg in front but can't figure what to do with the other one lol. We have hardwood floors and when I put him on his tummy he either pushes himself backwards or just gets really frustrated. I can see he wants to do it badly just can't figure it all out. I have even tried getting on all fours and crawling around the room which he loves but he just gets frustrated lol. There is a wide range for when babies will do things. I have decided to just let him do his own thing in his own time. All we can do is try to encourage it. I will keep toys out of his reach or the phone which he loves to get him to reach for it.
I know it's hard because I have read about so many babies that are already almost walking now!!

Well 9 months is still quite young so dont stress- definetly way too young to be walking. Theres is such a broad spectrum for the average age for a baby to start crawling, it can be anywhere from 4 months to 15 even 16 months. All children develop at different paces and he will get theyre when hes ready.

My daughter didn't walk until she was 13 months and didn't crawl until about a week before that. At about 9 or 10 months she would slide lol across the floor. We have hard wood floors and she would use one leg like a paddle and push herself. He'll figure it out. He may be just focused on learning something else at the moment. He'll probably just up and crawl one day like he's known how to do it all along.

Your state should have a Child-Find office. Call your local elementary school and see if they can point you in the right direction. You should be entitled to a free evaluation through the infants and toddlers program. It may be called by another name in your state - maybe Infants and Toddlers, Early Childhood, etc.....

I think our son was about 9 months old when he started to crawl but didn't walk until 17 months. Just be thankful at the moment because once they can crawl you have to move all the stuff from around the house that they start getting into once they can crawl! My mum was a bit impatient too about him learning to walk and every time she came to visit she would be trying to get him to walk all the time. In the end I just told her to leave him be and he would do it when he was ready.

My daughter is 8 and a half months and she just started doing the army crawl. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Some babies never crawl. It seems like he's getting close though if he can get himself to his stomach from a sitting position. That's what my daughter did before she started crawling. She worked on getting herself to her stomach then she started scooting and then army crawling all within about 2 weeks.

my daughter refused to crawl for a long time. she almost skipped crawling and went straight to walking holding my hands. i think she ended up learning to crawl watching other kids doing it. but seriously, don't worry! my friend's daughter crawled and walked later than mine (and she was older) but then skipped right past mine and is a daring little runner now while mine is still nervous about walking hands free.

Hi my oldest did not start crawley tell he was 10 1/2 months and he didn't atart walking till he was 17 months,lol...I was like you thinking there was something wrong with.. But I was also told that boys are alot slower than girls..was he your first child. Alot of mothers have also told me the first child takes a litlle longer because he doesn't have any sibblings to watch and learn..my youngest is 8 1/2 months and he's a little more advance cause he's got big brother to learn from.. So don't worry about it he will crawl when it's time..

Hi. I wouldn't stress too much if I were you. Children develop at their own pace and you will be a stressball if you try and compare. My baby boy is almost 9 months and he only recently started crawling and it all happened in 3 weeks!!! He wouldn't even roll over the one week, then the next week he was standing on all fours and rocking and a week later crawling. a Friend of mine's baby is 1 week younger than mine and started crawling at 7 months and is already standing now, so I was also worried. But it's just natural.

Anne-Marie,

Don't worry about that at all!!! My son is 10 months old and finally just started crawling. Its like all of a sudden one day he just started and it seems like he's been doing it forever!! Your son will probably do the same very soon!!!
