My daughter is 19 days old and got the flu yesterday. She's been coughing and sneezing and has a stuffy nose but no fever thank God. The pediatrition said there's not much we can do except give her salt water nose drops and monitor her fever. I keep monitoring her breathing because I'm scared she'll choke so I haven't been sleeping at all and I'm so worried about her. Any advice or similar experiences?

i usualy put my daugther in the bathroom with me.and let her breathe in all the steam so it'll clear her nostrils. it helps. if not. put vaseline inside hot water and let her breathe in the steam.. bt defintly dont forget to close her eyes.

Yes Hanah i know what you are feeling my son had the same thing and the same as most my friends children. It's totally normal for the baby to chatch this we refer to it as the 10 cold, due to the fact they normally get it around 10 days old. I also know where you are coming from with not sleeping when my son had it i was constantly up and down checking on him, what i did find helpful were the monitor mat that go under the mattress and if baby stops breathing it let you know straight away. Hope all goes well and congratulations

Hi Hannah,

Unfortunately at this age there's not much you can do except the saline nose drops. Our daughter is nearly 4 months old and caught a cold and she was give the same, no other medication.

We have also used a nasal aspirator to clear the mucus but it's only a temporary solution and not very popular with babies, I wouldn't recommend it for such a tiny baby.

I know that any parent would worry about the wellbeing of their baby, but you should get some sleep too, she'll be fine. You need to keep yourself healthy too. If you are breastfeeding, some antibodies will pass from you onto her to help. I've noticed that when my daughter caught a cold I got it as well just 2 days later, I guess it must be nature's way to "medicate" the baby.
