Carseats have expired dates because over time plastic breaks down. Different types of plastic breaks down at different speeds, this is why some car seats have an exp date of 5 years and others are 10 years. But once an exp date has hit it is no longer safe to use that car seat because the plastic will become brittel, and snap very easy, no matter how the carseat looks.

I know how you feel...im an unemployed single mom. the only things i bought new besides a few cute outfits i couldnt live without.....was the car seat/stroller combo. I paid about a hundred dollars for it. I know its alot of money but I had bought one from a yardsale thinking it was ok and found out it was totally not even close to being safe. So buying one was the next choice. How expired is it? Did you check to see if it has any recalls? If it doesnt...at least make sure it has the five point harness system that is required. I do know you can get one at walmart for around $50. Id send you mine...but my little guy is still using it. :) If its not a recall...then its up to you. But if it is a recall....PLEASE...dont use it. And check your laws too....that $50 dollars may be worth it if you have to pay a hefty fine if you get caught. Here in ohio, the hospital will give you a car seat so you can get home from the hospital. I believe you have to return it but check with your hospital...maybe you can get an up to date one for free..or a really good price!

i feel perfectly comfortable using this carseat it is in better shape than the other one that i have that is in date!! it seriously looks like it just came from the store. the reason i want to use this seat is because it was given to me and is exactly what i want for my daughter. money is tight and its free i don't have $70-$90 to go out to the store and get what i want. i am lookin for a non expired one from yardsales and stuff but until i find one i have to use something!! and i really love this seat!

I recently read that any car seat over five years old should not be used because the material in the straps, ect...may not be as stong as it should be. I wouldnt worry about legal consequences....I would worry about the safety of my child. Could you live with knowing that you used an expired carseat, if you did get into an accident and it did not protect your child? I dont think it is a chance worth taking. Of course, the choice is ultimatly up to you. Best of luck.
