i have just started introducing solids to my four month old son and i am having difficulties feeding him, he spits out the food or sticks out his tounge making it dificult for me to feed him. i have given him mashed potato, mashed butternut, custard, mealie-meal porridge with peanut butter and purity baby cereal. of all the above, he doesnt enjoy the purity baby cereal. i am also breastfeeding.

How many times a day should i give him solids? What other foods should i try and how best can i feed him without pulling out my hair. its always a struggle when it comes to meal times.

I would stop feeding the solids for a week or so.. It sounds like he isnt ready yet. If his tongue reflex is still pushing out the food you should wait a little bit til you give him solids. I started my daughter on just rice cereal first at 4 months and she was barely ready. There is no rush to start solids. Just recently it was recommended to not start them til 6 months. Its really all up to your baby's readiness cues. I also breastfed and noticed that my daughter loved rice cereal or oatmeal when it was mixed with warm breastmilk. Pump and freeze it and when your ready to use it put it into a bowl of hot tap water and let it defrost and warm up for about 15-20 mins. Good luck :)

thats pretty early to start... but if you really wanna keep going just keep pursuing it breakfast lunch and dinner. i would for sure keep breast feeding as much as he wants though. up until they are 1 they should get all their primary nutrients from formula or breast milk. offer milk first and than afterwards if he will eat if not he is full. its normal for such a young baby to spit it all out, they still have the extrusion relfex that protects them from choking, and makes them spit everything out. you will know when your baby will be ready. my son showed interest in our food and smacked his lips when we were eating. hes now almost 6 months adn we just today introduced his first veggie, before he was just on rice cereal 3 times a day and formula.

It's okay if he is not eating it yet. Usually at this age they are trying to learn to use their tongue in that way. Right now all he knows is the sucking motion. Don't worry your doing fine. Just keep trying and he will soon pick up on how he is suppose to do it.

It may seem at first like it is a mess but it gets better. I would also stick to one veggie or fruit a day just to see if he takes them well and in case he may have an allergy it's easier to pinpoint which one may have given him the reaction.

Good luck and don't give up!
