I took my 3 month old son to the hospital last night as he was struggling to breathe, and had a horrible sounding cough. We were told that he has croup and he was given steriods and we were told that it can take days for him to get better. I was wondering if there are anything I can do at home to help with the symptoms and help him feel better. It is so awful to see your little baby so sick!!!

i used to take the kettle intomy sons room, take the lid off and let it boil away. it filled his room with steam as he was sleeping and he wasn't as disturbed as moving into a different room. but be careful with the water. also you can put the pillow under the matress to prop him up if you are worried about just under the sheet. my son had croup at about six months and has never really had any problems since he is 11 now.

Its is awful when your baby is sick, My son had croup a few months back and it sounds terrible doesn't it? We were given a fact sheet from the doctor and some steriods what you need to do is take him into the bathroom and turn the hot shower on let the room fill up with steam and stand i the bathroom with him for 10 mins or so, this will loosen up his chest. Take him out in the fresh air too this is very important! In his cot place a pillow under his sheet so that he is propped up whilst he is sleeping. And most importantly lots and lots of cuddles. I hope this helps and he gets better soon.

Lots you can do. 1. wrap him in a blanket and take him outside at night. The cold, crisp air will do wonders to open up his airway. 2. HOT HOT HOT steamy shower (sit in the bathroom with the shower running and the door shut) the steam will do wonders to help open his airway 3. HUMIDIFIER in his room at night. moist air will help with his airways and a humidifier is a great way to circulate some (esp. in winter) 4. Croup will ALWAYS get worse at night, so be prepared. There is nothing over the counter that will help. Since he is on steroids, you should see an improvement in about 24-48 hours. He will not be completely better for several days to a week.

Keep an eye on his temp. if it goes above 103 or persists for longer than 24 hours, call dr. Tylenol can help with body aches and fevers. Baby vaporub can help some too. Absolutely keep him away from anyone who smokes (which i imagine you do anyway). Just be patient. he will get better. Croup is the baby equivalent to adult bronchitis, so be prepared that later he may be susceptible to bronchitis. I hope your little one is feeling better very soon. My daughter had croup probably 3 times before she was 2 (my husband gets bronchitis every year and it appears that my daughter is also going to be susceptible to it). He'll be better very soon. :-)))

OMG! My 9 month Allison had croup about a month ago and it really was the most HORRIBLE experience of my life (so far). I layed her down one evening and I heard her coughing and by the time I got to her she actually stopped breathing for a few seconds. I freaked out and ran out of the house with her to go to my nieghbors ( also my brother and sister in-laws) and when I got outside she seems fine. I was so confused I took her to the ER and they gave her steroids which helped with the swelling. All of the other posts are right. Hot steamy shower for 15 min will sooth the throat and then take her outside in the cool air. That will help with he swelling. Also a cool mist humidifier in the bedroom. It will likely get worse in the night. I had a few sleepless nights with her. I was a total basket case.
