They're called urate crystals. Here's a link to read about it. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-urate-c...

My son had a little red spot in his diaper at around a week old and I freaked out and thought it was blood, but the health nurse visited the same day and explained it to me. It can mean dehydration, but it's also common in newborns. I only saw them once and had no problems with dehydration. Hope this helps!

Our daughter had this just before we left the hospital and I asked a nurse what it was because I thought it was blood in her pee, but the nurse told me it is called "brick dust" and all it means is that their kidneys are starting to work.. She told me that not all babies get it and it is more common in boys. Hope that helps!

My son had that when he was born. The public health nurse said we may see red/orange crystals as he wasn't nursing enough....every 2-3 hours. After a few days it went away. Just make sure he has enough wet/poopy diapers.

It urine...and it's normal for babies to have this kind of crystalized urine in the first few days of life. Totally normal!

my son is now 10 months, but when he was first born and we bbrought him home from hospital we noticed those same red spots in his nappies( looks a little like terracotta) as i had the midwife still visiting i showed her and she assured me it was common in babies especially newborns and there could be many contributing factors such a dehydration if they arnt gettin enough, that was our problem my breast milk didnt come through properly so he wasnt getting enough food, as soon as i put him onto formula it stopped. hope i was a help :)

Hi there, Our son also had those little red spots (look like blood) in his nappies for a few days after being born - he was a bit dehydrated as he couldnt latch for the first few days. Once he got the hang of feeding, it went away.

I do not know what it is, but I wonder if maybe the diapers you are using may be the cause. If not for sure, then I would call his pediatrician and let them know. If it is not the diapers you may want to look into it. I don't mean to alarm though, I am sure he is fine, just want to be informed about your little one is all. Hope that helped, sorry I didn't really know the answer, take care.
