In New Zealand, they recommend that pregnant women/new mums eat lots of kiwi fruit (we also have a powdered drink called Kiwicrush which has a few pregnancy-safe additives) if they're constipated. Mandarins are also supposed to be high in fibre and good for constipation. Also, sitting on the toilet with your knees higher than your hips (i.e. resting your feet on a low stool or box) really helps if you'rw having difficulties.

Just wondering, what do you mean by safe? Are you pregnant? If so, you can't take all of the things that have been listed so far. Some of them, not all. Talk to your doctor about it. You could also just use diet change by adding more fibre (raison bran, granola bars) and making sure you are getting the recommended amount of water for a pregnant woman a day. Also, try to stay away from things that will back you up like cheese, bananas and rice. Good luck.

Colace is good for when your pregnant and safe of course. If not pregnate then Exlax is good or green tea.

Hi, after i had my daughter i tried everything from senna tablets, movical, microlax, and nothing worked instantly for me. Also i started taking metamucil 1-3 times daily which i think helped along with all the others. I also found out that if ur taking ibruprofen at all that makes it worst and should try another medication without it.

oh i felt your pain after i had my son!!! its horrible. i went to my local chemist and spoke to the pharmacist she was going to give me a laxative but because i had stitches she said a stool softener was better i took 2-3 a day and it helped heaps. also i know this is an embaressing topic but my physio also gave me some techniques that will help too, i'll try to explain it. when your on the loo because its not recommended to push or strain she said to take a deep breath lean forward and let you breath out going 'shh'shh'shh'shh' and so on until all your breath is out then repeat, sounds stupid i know but that combined with the stool softener saved me!!!!!! give it a try.

Miralax (not sure of spelling)...just add to water, no taste...works great and is over the counter. My dr had me on it right after I had my son.

I was put on a stool softner while pregnant and after I had my 2 week old son. The Doctor has prescibed Colace to me. You can get it over the counter and it is safe for you and your baby.
