Donnie sat up around 5 months for minutes at a time and surrounded by pillows. He's mastered it around 6 months.

Generally babies can not sit up by themselves at that age-though they may want to! He should do just fine sitting with support from behind however the ability to prevent backwards falls will develop last (first they can reach forward to catch themselves, then to the side and finally back). My daughter is 8mo2weeks and is just getting half way decent of sitting without falling backwards! Hope this helps!!

He doesn't quite of the balance to sit up alone and use both hands. Using a Boppy pillow or a blanket rolled and curled around him should help, but he needs to learn to balance with one hand while using the other. Usually babies sit on their own by 6 months, but every baby is different.
