What items do you recommend buying used for baby?

Which items would you buy either to save money or because they don't get used very often? Which items should you only buy new or are worth the money to splurge and buy brand new?

When they are very young, I would not buy anything plush/absorbent. I would only purchase things that are able to be sanitized.

I would however get most other things used things from family and friends.

I insist on NEW carseats.

Having learnt from my son who hated everything we bought him - - I would get used baby walkers, door bouncers, any sort of toys that are offered to you and clothes - newborn clothes are hardly ever worn because you buy so much and then you get given so much from members of your family that your lucky if you get one wear out of some of the stuff! I'd always buy new socks and vests and sleepsuits though, just because i've seen the mess that can come out of a newborn lol! As for new things, bottles, dummies, bedding, car seat and pushchair, possibly not the pushchair if you can get a nice one from somebody you know, but thats what i'm doing anyway! Good luck! x

Yeah probably wouldn't buy a second hand car seat. And personally I wouldn't buy a second hand mattress. Unless you know the person that you're getting the gear from and you know what the stuff has been through. I would buy bottles and dummies new. Otherwise toy and clothes provided they're save are fine they can always be washed.

anything...there will be plenty of needed items that you can't buy second hand so save your money...rummage sales, second hand stores are the way to go...car seats should be newer but can be second hand...same with cribs...i agree with amy to check the recall lists but don't be afraid to buy second hand... yu never know when you may need the money for something important...

just about anything but a carseat. And make sure that the things you buy used are not recalled.

it is usually easier to get a used item when you know the person who had it first

I have done pretty much everything used for my daughter and now my son. The only things we bought new was the car seat, crib, and bottles. The crib we did just because of all the recals and was feeling overwellmed sifting threw all the information. . . But my cousin took the bottles for her daughter since she knew where they came from along with my carseat. .

Definitely used bouncers, swings, high chairs, clothes, toys, furniture, etc. Like someone already said, unless I knew the person, I wouldn't do used bottles or car seats, but if it's a friend who you know well and trust, go for it! I even borrowed a breast pump (bought all new parts) from a friend and saved a bundle! Just be sure when you are given things to ask if they want them back. I had a few people who did want the things back, but others who didn't care :-)

Joy hit the nail on the head. I am not comfortable buying a used car seat because even though it may look like it hasn't been in an accident, you don't know (unless you get it from family/friends). I also can't say i'd get a used crib or bottles unless I knew the person. I think everything else would be ok.
