Hi everyone, I just joined the group. My six month old son Asher has had eczema since he was about 1-2 months old. We live in South Western Canada. I've tried so many different creams, as I'm sure you all have too. I haven't found anything fantastic but Vaseline brand Problem Skin Therapy has been the best I've tried. I also bath him in Aveeno Baby wash for extra senstive skin (it has colloidal oatmeal). He scratches a lot; I cut his nails twice a week but he still makes some pretty bad marks at times. He's also allergic to milk.

For scratching - ScratchMeNots and Kumfy Cotton work really well.
Creams are hard because what works for one child may not work for another. It's really trial and error. We like Monkey Balm.
Determine the triggers - is it food, heat, detergents, etc?

the best thing to do is see a dermatologist before it gets any worse.my daughter also have eczema..and it started when she was about three months old and she's 20 months now.it only got worse about three months ago and we tried everything but it didn't get better .so we finally got to see dermatologist last week and she prescribed some steroid creams, anti biotics and mosturiser and after two days of treatment...her face is so much better and theres no more redness..and no scratching as well.

I use olive oil in his bath water and when I am done bathing him I appl Derma Smoth topical oil. But you have to apply the oil on wet skin then I rub him down w/vasaline. Then in the morning I apply Curel anti-itch then more vasaline. Oh yeah and he has 1oz of Claritin at night(Allergy medicine). Considering eczema is allergic reactions. Also watch your babies acidic intake this flaires the eczema and so does dairy. Ppl do not know he even has it b'cuz I stay on top of it.

My five month old has mild eczema and I use Gentle Naturals Baby Eczema Cream. It works well, just have to put it on 3-4 times a day. I read on wiki that children with Eczema should not get either the small-pox or the chicken-pox vaccine. Seeking advice with mom's of older children with eczema in whether or not your little ones have had these vaccines.

My daughter has had eczema since she was a couple of months old. She's allergic to eggs, turkey, chicken, pork and soy. Taking away the food helped some but not alot. She also would scratch until she bled. Our dr gave us Derma-smoothe oil. It has been a life saver. She's 3 now and her skin has never looked better. I also bathe her every day, use dye free detergent and continue to avoid the foods she's allgeric to and she gets zyrtec everyday. I use Derma-smoothe on her skin every day, several times a day and she no longer scratches.

Lots of great info!! We use Mustella products for bath time and Aquaphor along with ScratchMeNots. www.ScratchMeNot.com Greattttt for cutting down on scarring. No matter what I did, my lo just scratched until forever lol But at least this way, the scratching didn't leave the bloody scars we were use to--I actually witnessed scars healing instead of being re-scarred.

Hi, Lots of great advice on here. My son Aidan (10 mo) also has eczema. Through trial and error we landed on the following routine:
bed time - short baths in warm water using the Eucerin oil wash; then apply baby oil (while still in tub); then dry off and apply eucerin cream.
Morning - he goes to the babysitter in his pjs and she applies vaseline where needed before he gets dressed.
For cleaning products - we use the shark steam cleaner (awesome!) - so no chemicals. Have been using regular baby detergent, but am going to check out what has been recommended here. And we also do the no dairy and try to eat organic when possible. Best of luck!

My 11 month has had eczema since he was 2 months. He has food allergies and we are still testing him to narrow it down. It is a very stressful condition for the child and mother. We have tried steroid creams, medicine, lotions etc. I avoid dairy, wheat, nuts, eggs and peanuts. I do bathe him every day with no soap and put lotion on him. He is fed exclusively a rice, fruit and veg diet and he loves it. Most of the time the eczema does not bother him. I wash his clothes with soap nuts and always make sure he is wearing pants when he crawls on the carpet. I tried Kamut Puffs and feed him only organic foods.
His eczema is mostly on his legs, behind the knee and by the feet. Read the labels on everything, get your baby tested to see what is causing the eczema. Try to avoid dairy and all the allergen foods. There is oatmeal in Aveeno products which could be a problem if the baby is allergic to gluten. Also, we have tried Cetaphil and it has almond oil which is also a problem if there is a nut allergy.
I hope you find a solution and your baby finds relief. Good luck.

My 3 month old boy, Rylen, also has eczema. Mostly on his face. We wash his clothes in frangrance and dye free detergent, use Aveeno baby wash and lotion (fragrance free) and for his face i use Lansinoh Diaper rash cream. I swear by it!

My son Asher also has eczema. He too is 6 months old! We religiously cream him with aqueous cream and hydrocortizone cream. However just yesterday we visiting the doctor and told to try rice brail oil on his skin at night. It seems to be working so far.

Hello Erin,

Just wanted to stop by and say that I am one of Rebecca's friends that switched my everyday products to remove the toxins from my house. By doing this has helped my son's eczema out soo much. I suggest that ya'll go and check out her website at www.CleanerGreenerHomes.com

My daughter had SEVERE eczema on her entire body, basically since birth. She is 9 1/2 months now and we pretty much have it controlled, finally! It was a long journey. We tried every kind of laundry soap, lotion, and "old wives tale" there was.

Our routine now is:
1. Seventh Generation laundry soap (it is non-toxic, hypoallergenic, dye-free, fragrance-free, ect...), vinegar in the rinse cycle and dryer balls instead of fabric softener.
2. Short luke-warm baths with a little baking soda to soften the water and just a wash cloth (no soap). We used the Aveeno for a while too but I think it made it worse (there are a lot of chemicals in there). If we use soap, it's an organic cleanser.
3. Loose cotton clothing (so she doesn't over-heat), sweating makes it worse.
4. I feed her only organic foods. My daughter too is allergic to milk and I'm still breast feeding so I've been off dairy.
5. And the thing that seems to make the most difference - her lotion is Baby Avalon Organics nourishing lotion at least twice a day.

We tried the steroid creams from the doctor and they did almost nothing for her. Plus there was one he prescribed that had crazy side-effects and a warning about links to cancer!

It sounds like a lot but after a few months of dealing with the raw, dry skin that she would scratch until it bled, I would have done ANYTHING to make it better. She is a much happier baby now. Good luck!

P.S. I am by no means an expert. This is just our story and what worked for us.
By the way, we too live in SW Canada (Calgary). I think the dry air here makes it worse.

Hi Erin,

I've found through a good bit of research and talking to other moms who's children used to suffer from eczema that by simply switching where you buy your household products will dramatically help if not completely eliminate eczema as well as other common issues like allergies and asthma. Check out this website:

www.CleanerGreenerHomes.com

Most household products that we use in our homes contain really nasty chemicals and toxins that little ones and a lot of adults have bad reactions to. Hence the eczema. A good friend of mine who's two daughters both suffered badly from eczema switched all her household products over to naturally based products that don't contain any bleach, or ammonia or formaldehyde( which is in most baby products, look for the ingredient Q-15 or Quaturnium-15). Her girls no longer suffer at all from eczema. She threw out the steroid cream she had for them.

I could bet this will help your son Asher.

As far as the milk allergy goes, it may be something he grows out of. My daughter was lactose intolerant and couldn't have milk either. She's almost 2 and I don't think she is intolerant any more but I still have a hard time getting her to drink milk. Time will tell.
