Welcome one and all!

I'll be the first to admit that I am not a baby led weaning expert...in fact my baby is only 3 months old. I started this community because I'm currently researching weaning so that I am somewhat prepared when the time comes. I look forward to reading about your experiences!

Hi! I've just joined this group. My boy is 8.5 months old and we've been BLW since he was 6 months. He was very enthusiastic at first but the last week or so he's lost interest in solids. Luckily he's still breastfeeding lots! I'm figuring he'll go back to the food when he's ready. The only problem is that I'm getting lazy since he's been uninterested, I've been offering it to him less as he just chucks it on the floor. Oh well.

Has the doctor actually said she has a milk allergy? Is she breast or formula fed? And what problems has she had that might indicate an allergy?

Hi,

I have a six month old baby and I started weaning her 3 weeks, I am following the BLW principles and so far my baby loves it...

I read the book "Baby Led Weaning by Gill Rapley" and everything I have read has been accurate when put into practice. My baby loves and is able to eat a wide variety of foods including; Broccoli, egg plant, parsnips, sweet potatoes, cheese, pasta, pizza, bread, bread sticks, avocado, potatoes, bananas, apples, pears, orange, peppers, pineaple. I am extremely pleased with how this is going... she is happy to explore food, has never chocked and I never force feed her which means that she enjoys each meal time. She is able to hold a pre-filled spoon with a bit of help and put it in her mounth and eat the food in it.

The only set back that I have found so far is trying to convince my mother/father/brother and other relatives who support the baby puree weaning method that I am doing the right thing. My husband and I are really happy with our baby's progress.

Good luck.

My son is a year now and we started solids at 6 months with purees but switched to the BLW route at around 7 months. He has done so well with it and I just feel like it's so much more natural. I look forward to sharing, and I hope that I can offer support and information to those who are just starting out:)

Yes thank you for starting this.
I just heard about BLW and was very curios.
My daughter turned 6months last week and Ive been giving her Oat cereal once a day but she doesn't really seem all that interested. Now that Ive read that link and gotten a better understanding of BLW I cannot wait to go and try it!
She is always grabbing things....toys, wooden spoons and such and putting them in her mouth so might as well try some real food! And it sounds way easier then mashing and pureeing!! Thank goodness for this site!

Thanks for starting this community! I haven't started BLW yet either (my baby is 4-1/2 months old, and I'm waiting until after 6 months to start solids), but ever since I heard about BLW, it just sounded "right", you know? Rice cereal? No thank you! :)

I am not an expert, but I have practiced Baby Led Weaning  with all three of my girls...which is why I have been nursing for almost 8 years, through 2 pregnancies and tandem nursed twice.

My understanding is that the weaning process begins the moment anything other than breastmilk is introduced to a nursling.  The weaning process can then take days, weeks, months or years to complete depending on the mommy and baby.

I was very worried about my girls developing allergies since my husband was allergic to just about everything as a baby and even had to have tea bottles with vitamins because he was allergic to all forms of milk and formula available then.  I wanted to nurse as long as they were interested and to avoid introducing "allergy" foods until after the recommended dates to help them not have the allergy issues he had.  I was very lucky!!! None of my girls have any type of allergies at this time and they are almost 8, almost 6 and 3 1/2 years old.

My ped. was very supportive and assured me that as long as the girls were growing between each appointment and they were healthy he encouraged me to keep nursing "because why change something that was working".   When my oldest did not want anything to do with table food he kept encouraging me to keep trying but not force it because perhaps there was something in the foods we were trying that she was/might be/could be sensitive to and that could have become an allergy if I had persisted in offering.  He said to let her take the lead and as long as she was still nursing she was fine!

I appreciated his feelings about food as many peds are much less supportive of nursing babies and try to force babies to eat certain foods at certain ages.

My advice for other mothers is to trust your instincts and those of your baby and you will know when baby is ready to start solids.
