My husband and I both really like the name Garrett for a boy, but now I am having second thoughts because I am afraid that people will call him Gary for short and I really do not like the name Gary. What do you all think? Do you think that there would be a very good possibilty of people calling him Gary? Should we think about a different name?

IF YOU CALL HIM GARRETT ALL THE TIME, THATS WHAT HIS FRIENDS WILL CALL HIM. UNLESS WHEN HES OLDER AND HE WANTS TO BE CALLED GARY, THEN RHATS UP TO HIM. PS. I LOVE THE NAME!!

I've had the same worry with liking Juliette and hating the idea that it'd be shortened to Julie . . . but I think if you instill in him that his name is not Gary, a simple correction will keep people from calling him that.

I like that name....my husband had a great uncle garrett....our son is named Henry and my mother has tried to call him Hank, but I just make it clear that if I wanted him to be called Hank that is what I would have name him

I don't think people calling him Gary instead of Garrett would be too much of a problem. My name is Cathryn and occasionally someone will try to call me "Cathy", but usually people will call me by Cathryn, the name I use to introduce myself. If someone tries to call me "Cathy" very politely and firmly let them know that I don't like that nickname and I would prefer it if they call me Cathryn. You'll probably have the worst time with some "old" men. It seems like some old men get the biggest kick out of giving kids a nickname that they think is clever. Otherwise I've never really had an issue.
