I just had my first child on June 1st, and have known since I first heard about baby sign language that it would be something I would want to try with my kid. We picked up a couple books of signs and flipped through them a bit. When Nia was born I picked out a few that I figured we would use often and thought I would start with those. We picked: "mom", "dad", "diaper" "change", "love", "more" and "milk"
we've added a couple now (at almost 2 months old): "wet" and "dirty" to go with the "diaper", "beautiful" (cause I tell her she is all the time), "baby", and "finished".
Over the last two or three weeks she has really started staying awake a lot longer and is much more alert and aware, although she always has been a fairly alert baby. The other day I was holding her in my lap facing me and she started waving her hands in front of her, it looked like she was trying to sign milk. I know she's still so young so I felt like it probably wasn't on purpose but regardless I asked her "do you want some milk?" and I signed "milk". She started freaking out, getting really excited, eating her hands, and sticking her tongue out like she does when she's hungry.
A day or two later I was telling Nana and Grandma the story and she saw me signing "milk" and again she got really excited and started eating her hands and sticking her tongue out, so I offered her a boob (while signing milk) and sure enough she was more than happy to take it.
I am amazed that she seemed to learn it so fast!! Although it is just the one so far, her favorite activity lol. Honestly with pretty much all the other signs we're working with so far she barely even pays attention and looks at me while I sign them. But still I'm stoked with the one :D
The sign may have looked just like flailing hands in the air and needs a lot of refinement with time, but I am sure she definitely understands it.
Yay! I'm so glad I decided on baby signing!
