Today is National Wear Red Day. Please read this. Everyone seems to know the telltale signs of a heart attack - massive vice-like pain in the chest and the left arm goes numb, right? That's very normal, but there are also some less known symptoms that a lot of women experience, often delaying or never making it to a hospital. Those include (taken from the mayo clinic website):
Neck, shoulder, upper back or abdominal discomfort
Shortness of breath
Nausea or vomiting
Lightheadedness or dizziness
Please tell your mom or sisters or anyone that is a woman. My mom died almost a year ago from a heart attack. As far as we know, I was the last one to talk with her on the phone. She had to hang up because she had "the worst stomach ache of her life" that hit her like a Mac truck on her commute home from work the night before. She also was so tired. We both figured it was the flu or a cold and chalked up the tiredness to staying up with the stomach ache all night.
Later on I got a chance to go over her health records with her doctor. She mentioned things I already knew, my mom was obese and had high blood pressure. Then she added that she was borderline diabetic and borderline high cholesterol and the medicine she was taking for her arthritis virtually negated the medicine she was taking for her high blood pressure. All together the signs pointed towards a perfect heart attack victim. I really wish she told my mom the symptoms at her checkup only a couple of weeks before she died. Please tell the women you know.
