What do you think are the greatest advantages of homeschooling?

For our family, it is flexibility. We did not choose homeschooling lightly. It wasn't something we really wanted, but felt like God led us to. Now, 5 years later, it is a perfect fit for our missionary family. We have a strange working schedule and homeschooling gives us freedom to be flexible.

What advice would you give to a mom who is considering homeschooling her child?

I believe it has to be a family decision. I got on board with the idea before my husband did, and I waited until he felt led in this direction also. With us on the same page, it helps get through the rough spots, since we both made the decision to do this.

The other thing that really got me through my very difficult first year, was networking online and finding moms I could relate to. My circle of friends online has been such a HUGE support to me through the years.

What's one homeschooling challenge you've faced, and what solutions did you find?

We have faced many challenges, but one is definitely dealing with our children and their *issues* daily with no break. I was a public school teacher and always had the idea that I would send my kids to public school. With that mindset, a mom figures a bit of a *break* into her day ;-). With no break, it gets draining to find time to refresh and calm down sometimes. My husband has really helped me with this, allowing me some time each day to just get away from the children to refresh and regroup. Working together has been KEY for us.

What's a great developmental toy for preschoolers?

Carisa

I love open ended toys for preschoolers. Toys that expose an early educational skill in a fun and creative way. One of my very favorites is the Tall Stacking Pegs Building Set: http://amzn.to/PvJ2XM This toy has been in our home for years, and all 3 of my kids still play with it today {currently ages 10, 6, and 3}.
