The Adventures of Marker Girl

I found my daughter doing some decorating of her own with a black sharpie, on herself and on my furniture! I am a mom and designer, my blog shows you how I decorate around my family’s lifestyle and my clients too, creating family-friendly...

Karen is a winner of Top 25 Home Design Moms - 2013

Of all the DIY projects you've done, which was your favorite?

Faux painting a mural in my kid's rooms and game room when they were babies. I did it with my sister. A great time spent with her and my kids really enjoyed the murals. For me DIY is not about doing it myself, it usually includes my family and a great time spent working on something together.

What's your advice for moms who want to decorate their home on a budget?

Invest in good upholstery always and you can create art and find inexpensive accessories to save money. Ask the store's salesperson when you are considering an item when is their next sale (they generally have sales several times a year). Look and see if there is anything you have that just needs a makeover like painting it, if your budget is really tight. Pinterest is full of fabulous ideas; create a pin board for your home... Check magazines and read blogs too for ideas!

The other very important thing is to know your budget before you start to plan out the design and be realistic with what you want and need. Knowing what costs are and what you can afford is so important when decorating on any kind of budget.

Where do you find inspiration for keeping your home stylish?

Fashion! Love looking outside of interior design for inspiration. What I find inspiring from fashion is color combinations, patterns, and little details like contrasting piping and embellishments. And of course I absolutely love Pinterest, I use it for clients and myself!
