What's your go-to product or brand that gets around your child's food allergy?

Definitely Enjoy Life chocolate chips and mega chunks. We use them in cookies, muffins, pancakes, and as cupcake/cookie decorations. We have also melted them for making s'mores and chocolate covered pretzels. There are so many treats my daughter might never have been able to experience if not for these products. We always keep a stock pile in the pantry.

What's one thing you'd like all moms to know about food allergies (either about your family's specific allergies or in general)?

I would like all Moms to know how important it is to support each other in taking any precautions necessary to keep our children safe. Every mother of an allergic child has a unique set of guidelines they are comfortable with in different situations. These are based on experience and their child's unique needs. It is important never to second guess or make another mother feel like she is being too strict or lax just because your child's needs are not the same as her child's needs.

What's one of your favorite recipes that's safe for your family's food allergies?

We love making Chicken and Dumplings, free of dairy, egg, and nuts. We simply cook a whole chicken at home in the crock pot. Remove the meat from the bone. Then mix up a batch of allergy free biscuit dough, or use safe refrigerated dough. Roll out the dough and cut into thin strips. Boil a pot of chicken broth and drop in the dough strips. After the dough boils for a few minutes, add the chicken. We also add frozen vegetables (usually peas, corn, carrots, and green beans). Just simmer on low for as long as desired. Add salt and pepper to taste. Voila!!! Comfort food at it's best.

What advice would you give to a mom who just found out her child has a food allergy?

Find support and use the information of others who have started blazing this trail for you. Find a forum and ask as many questions as you can think of. Also, read questions others have asked and the answers. Mothers love sharing food allergy information regarding recipes, products, situational pointers, and how to deal with family and friends. Also, www.allergenmenu.com has a lot of great tips on how to eat out safely and successfully.

What's a great allergy-safe food to bring to a party?

Hummus!!! It's a great dip and kids LOVE to dip things. You can pair it with your favorite safe veggies, crackers, tortilla chips, or pita bread. It opens up a lot of possibilities. You can even flavor it with almost anything you like. You can't go wrong.
