Freelance fashion writer turned mama of three (preschooler and twin toddlers!) Ask Mama MOE was created as a place for mamas to ask questions, get advice and learn new recipes and crafts for their children.

What's a great destination for a family vacation in Canada?

I'm all about local love. I am so happy to bring my family to places nearby Montreal that are great and special. Some examples are the local farm for apple picking, visiting the oldest windmill in Quebec, the Montreal Jazz Festival, the hot air balloon festival in St Jean and the Brome Fair in the Eastern Townships.

In what ways is your home town unique from other places you've lived or traveled?

Montreal is known to be unique the world over. No question. This place offers so much for young and old, year round. I love all the possibilities that each month brings - we look forward to so much here!

What outdoor activity do you enjoy doing most with your kids?

Honest? Going to the beach all day is my version of bliss - pack a picnic, bring the sand toys and a big umbrella and that is perfection! But that is not our norm. We make the most of each beautiful day. We even have picnics in our own backyard - wherever we are, it's going to be fun.

Help us create the ultimate pirate-themed birthday party! Please share an idea for a game, recipe, party favor, decoration, etc. that's perfect for a pirate party. Include a link to a photo if you have one!

Julia a.k.a. Mama MOE

My three kids adore pirates right now! This year we had a pirate-themed party for their birthdays (they all have the same birthday!) and it was SO fun! Mama and Papa MOE dressed up with bandanas on our heads and the kids had felt captain hats I found at an art store. We had a pirate ship cake (SO easy to make! I found the design on the Disney website) and we did a treasure hunt. While I read the kids a pirate story inside, my husband ran around the backyard hiding plastic gold coins. Because the kids were young, I made signs to help them find the treasure. I printed out "Jake and the Neverland Pirates" characters and pasted them on cardboard to hold them upright. Everyone had a great time and my kids loved their party. For more ideas, I wrote a Pirate Day blog post a little while ago.
