How do you celebrate New Year's Eve with young children?

This year I think we will stay in with our 7 year old - make some snacks rent a cool DVD and spend some time chatting about the new year. Then when it is very late for a 7 year old to be up :) we will send her to bed with a million kisses and tell her all about how it will be a new year when she wakes up.but before she does we''ll fit in some ice cream before bed and some fizzy juice in champagne glasses... maybe some sparkly cupcakes and light some sparklers while listening to some Frank Sinatra :) Once the little one has drifted off to sleep the husband and I will sit outside under the stairs as we do every year and talk, eat and wrap ourselves in blankets to keep warm... of course there will be yawning and joking and then just after 12 a kiss and off to bed for a snooze

What are your tips for planning an affordable birthday party?

baking things that go far but don't cost very much like Meringues which require 2 eggs and 100grams of sugar to make roughly 12 - 15 meringues. or jelly/jello - you can use fresh fruit juice and gelatine place in molds and they looks super cute. fresh fruit chopped up on kebab sticks. plating games instead of hiring entertainment! pass the parcel, scavenger hunt, dunking for apples etc... also do party packs made out of things you have - like recycling jars or containers that you can collect over a few weeks or months before the party then paint them or cover in scrap book paper or fabric. fill with a few sweets and a thank you :) pick a theme where you don't have to buy branded merchandise... like mickey mouse or hello kitty. maybe rather pick a country (eg chinese) or a general theme like a rainbow party.

What's your family's favorite recipe for chicken or tofu?

I make a nachos recipe that my daughter and husband love containing chicken... (I RARELY eat meat so I simply leave the chicken out of mine.) Take nachos chips, make a delicious home made tomato salsa. add some cooked chicken then cheese and mushrooms (optional) GRILL then add cream cheese and avo guacamole take a look at the link for full recipe and easy homemade SALSA :) You never know if may become one of your families favorites too :)

What's an easy, kid-friendly way to decorate cupcakes?

We love to bake GLUTEN-FREE cupcakes and then decorate them with butter cream icing which my daughter sieves the icing sugar (snow sugar) and then i mix in the butter and add a little color and then my daughter mixes again until all the color is incorporated. Then out come the butter knives and we ice away. I use pinterest and party blogs They are both filled with beautiful photos to give you ideas of what works and what doesn't Also you can see very quickly colour schemes and table layouts as well as pretty cakes

I think making your own homemade truffles in a flavor you like can be delicious and rewarding. What's your favorite easy recipe for an Easter or Passover meal?

Roasted lamb shanks - It requires a little preparation - but not much at all. Makes a lovely hearty meal for both young and old (and if you don't like meat like myself at the moment) then have the delicious mashed potato that you serve the shanks on with some yummy sauce. One of the cakes I have made over the years is a fun rainbow cake for my daughter who is gluten intolerant. I usually bake a cake on her birthday but its often a chocolate cake as cocoa can disguise different tasting flours quite well :) ... So at her party after blowing out the candles, we cut the cake in front of her and to her surprise-- a rainbow of colours appeared :) A bit more about the cake... The cake was covered in pink fondant and was surrounded by a white fondant ribbon and bow with my grand mothers antique broach and earrings embellishing it (as per my daughters request) she was only 7 at the time and saw jewels on a cake when we were looking at cakes on the internet together :) pics are at the bottom of the post which can be found here http://www.bettybake.co.za/2011/10/oriental-party.html remember to scroll to the bottom

When I can get my hands on the tropical tasting passion fruit I make PASSION FRUIT MILK ICE... a milk based (with out the cream) version of ice cream .
