What's the best part of raising a family in Australia?
I love the "She'll be 'right!" attitude of Australians. I am comforted by the (largely) supportive and non-judgemental parents I see around me - quite different from the competitive Olympic Parenting I see portrayed online. I love that we have beautiful weather almost all year. I love that it's only a 20 minute drive from suburbia to wineries, countryside and farms. 20 minutes in the opposite direction and we're at the most exquisite stretch of beach. I love listening to my children's cute little Aussie accents. I love the way Australians love to laugh. Parenting kids here is a privilege and I am really grateful that I get to watch my kids grow up in such a beautiful place.
In what ways is Australia unique from other places you've lived or traveled?
I grew up in South Africa and find Australia (and Australians) to be remarkably similar. Compared to the United States, I'd say we're a lot less intense over here. America is shiny and bright and exciting and busy. Australia is a lot more laid back and free-flowing (in my mind and my limited experience, anyway). Europe is a whole different kettle of fish and the Middle East is, again, completely unique. This world is such an interesting place, full of incredibly rich and interesting experiences.
What do your kids love most about living in Australia?
I love everything about living in Australia, bar one thing - the fact that my entire family lives scattered across the globe. I am heartsore about my kids not growing up with my parents in their daily lives. They are also missing out on growing up with their cousins, aunts and uncles. Still, I wouldn't change it for the world because there is simply no place on earth that offers a childhood and a family life like Australia.
