What do you love about being a military mom?

The opportunity to help younger moms with the ups and downs of military life, especially moving and deployments.

What advice would you give to moms on how to build a new support circle after a move?

If you have small children at home it usually takes care of itself as the kids make friends. Make sure to join groups like the enlisted or officer spouse group, your squadron spouse group and maybe some chapel activities where you are likely to find people with like needs and concerns.

What's a tip for helping kids cope with a parent's absence?

Set up a special routine. For example, my girls and I had "chick flick" night the first Friday of a deployment. We'd watch movies (age appropriate), had pizza and sometimes slept in the living room.It gave them something to be excited about while Daddy was gone.

What's your best tip for teaching a gradeschooler about money?

When our twin daughters were about 9 or 10, they saved their money so they could buy the popular Furby toy for $35. After about a week, they lost interest and one commented that was the worst use of $35 and she wished she hadn't done it. If they wanted something like that, we had them save for it and the lessons were well worth it!
