Where do you find vlogging inspiration?

Honestly, the inspiration comes from my children, because they love doing this. As long as they enjoy vlogging, we will continue to help millions of moms and daughters find that quality bonding time.

For our hairstyles, I combine years of doing my daughters’ hair with inspiration from all around me. The style ideas are endless, especially if you can add your own spin to what you see in movies, on TV shows, on websites, in magazines, or at red carpet events, etc.

I am also inspired by other moms I see online, many of whom appear in this list, who share helpful tips and tricks to help me become a more effective and involved mother. It drives me to want to continue doing the same!

The inspiration is particularly palpable from the single or widowed fathers… when they write in to tell me that what we do has changed their relationships with their young daughters and allowed them to provide the girls a piece of their mommy that they could not provide previously.

What tips would you give a mom who wants to start video blogging?

First and foremost, vlog about something you love! Family vlogging is a perfect example, but it does not have to be limited to that. It can be anything from sunrises, to puppies and cupcakes. If you really love what you do, your passion will shine and your viewers will feel it.

Secondly, we should never vlog with ad revenue as our primary goal. If it is, then we will be sadly disappointed. Although you can make a good income from a vlog, if your passion does not outweigh your desire for a big payoff… the viewers will perceive that and lose interest fast.

Next, be consistent with your vlogging, but be careful not to overextend yourself. Think of your vlog as a TV show… which airs on a set day and time of the week. {Thousands of our fans will actually sit there beforehand, refreshing the page every minute to be one of the first to see the new video when it goes live!} Daily vlogging is a lot of work, and can quickly consume all of your time. Find a balance in consistency that works for you and your family, without you sacrificing valuable mommy time. We choose once per week, Sunday nights between 6-7pm MST, and that works great for us.

Lastly, in the vlogging world… the first 10-15 seconds is key, so be creative. Also, often less is more. We find that for our hairstyle tutorials, 3-5 minutes is the optimal vlog length. Longer videos tend to find people skipping throughout or leaving altogether due to boredom. YouTube also gives a higher weighted ranking to videos with an effective viewer retention from beginning to end.

How do you balance vlogging and motherhood?

There is not a perfect answer for this question. Being a mommy is the hardest and most important job we will ever have in our lives! These precious little beings are 100% dependent upon us as caregivers and nurturers, and we only have one shot at it!

Fortunately, I vlog about something we are doing anyway everyday, so it really does not impede much on my mothering. It isn’t always easy, I want to be honest about that, and there are times that we have to make sacrifices in either direction. The operative word truly is "balance".

Being a vlogger is a perfect fit for me, because I can stay at home, be my own boss, and set my own hours. I try hard to schedule my work at times when I am waiting in the car during 16 hours of carpools each week, and when the children are at school or in bed. Since my husband has always handled the technical/business side of things, we are grateful that he is now able to help us full-time, which has been a huge help to me in adding further balance as our vlog grows. Every family situation is different, and the parent(s) should seek that balance and find solutions that work best for everyone.

I also feel blessed that our vlog is a family affair. It incorporates me as the vlogger, our children as the hairstyle models, and my husband as the videographer/editor. There are not a lot of opportunities in the world where a family can live and work together, and, more importantly… have a great time doing it!
