What do your kids love most about living in New York?

My 22 year old loves the shopping, the food scene and Central Park. My 17 year old loves Astor Place, the East Village and Union Square. And my 4 year old loves the playgrounds, the subway and the Museum of Natural History.

What's a great destination for a family vacation in New York?

So many great options to choose from! A stroll on the High Line. A day on Governor's Island. Exploring Central Park, including the zoo and the many wonderful playgrounds. Musueums! MOMA, the Whitney, and Natural History of course. Biking along the West SIde, overlooking the Hudson River. Walking the Brooklyn Bridge (and then spending the day in DUMBO).

What's your favorite affordable outdoor activity to do with your kids?

Governor's Island is one of our favorite places. The ferry ride alone is a treat for our youngest, and exploring the island is so much fun. You can take a bike or surrey ride around the island, with the best views of Manhattan. There's mini-golf and a fabulous tree house. And there are always great family-oriented activities planned throughout the season.

At what age do you let your child decide what to wear?

I like this approach, which can be put in place as young as 2 or 3 years of age: you "pre-select" 2 or 3 outfits that you approve of and let your child "choose" between them. In this way, he/she feels some control over the situation and you can live with either choice. THAT said, there are children who adamantly insist on tutus for pre-school and snow boots in summer. Having been a parent for over 20 years now I can honestly say, pick your battles - and clothing should NOT be one of them. As long as they are warm and dry and covered up it's all good!!

http://www.sherisilver.com/?p=3408 I made these Sesame Street cupcakes for my son Noah's 3rd birthday. I wanted to do a modern take on the characters and I was so pleased with the results!
