How does blogging help you deal with challenges?
Since Erin's death my blog has provided me with a space to talk about her short life and the journey that we took together, helping me to deal with my grief. It has also allowed me to share with others the work of some amazing charities and organisations that have helped us. In this way, blogging has allowed me to publically thank them for their hard work, which provides me with some comfort through my grief. It is also helping me to raise money for these great causes in Erin's name, as my gift to her.
What's a book or song that has inspired you?
When I decided to create Erin's Gift and try to raise money for some wonderful charities in the name of my beautiful daughter the lyrics to the song, 'A Little Fall of Rain' from the musical Les Miserables came to mind. This song is about loss and grief, but also about the comfort that can come from being with the ones you love. I find great comfort now from knowing that I was with Erin as much as I could possibly be throughout her short life, thanks to Ronald McDonald House Charities who provided us with accommodation on site at the hospital. Thanks to them we have many more memories of our precious girl.
In particular the line, "and rain will make the flowers grow" resonates with me. This is what Erin's Gift and my blog is all about - the rain are the tears that fall following Erin's death as we try to come to terms with losing our beautiful daughter. Through raising money for charities and helping spread the word about the work they do we are trying to create something positive from this tragedy - we are making the flowers grow.
After a particularly rough day, how do you raise your spirits?
Erin's death is so recent that I find it hard to raise my spirits and all days are rough. I am able to find some comfort from being with my loved ones and talking about Erin and all that she gave us in her short life. I also look through the many photos that we took of her and try to lose myself in memories from the days when she seemed well and when you wouldn't have known there was anything wrong with her. I also find comfort in searching for quotes and sayings on the internet that describe my feelings and I often post these on my blog. Finally, the friends that I have found through twitter are able to raise my spirits. I have been able to make contact with other women who have experienced similar loss to myself and benefit greatly from their friendship.
