Full of it...

My blog is a collection of semi-coherent tales from my perspective as a part-time modern dancer, wife, mother of two and interweb junkie on a quest to become a better person.

What mental wellness or mental health issues do you blog about?

If you could give other moms one tip on mental wellness, what would it be?

What mental wellness resources would you recommend for moms? (Support systems, specific websites...)

How do you stay healthy during the holiday season?

Gina Jacobs Thomas

Holidays are a time to celebrate, but it doesn't mean you have to throw your health out the window with the crinkled wrapping paper. One thing that helps is that age-old mantra of "everything in moderation." If I know I'm going to a party, I will try to cut back on sweets and salt earlier in the day and up the veggies and fruit. A quick snack of protein, like a stick of string cheese, before venturing out to parties or shopping can also help curb binging. And if I do go hog wild on Christmas day with candy and pie? I try not to beat myself up about it and jump back on the healthy train the next day. As for exercise, I take it indoors, relying on cardio and strength-training DVD's, and will bring them along with me when traveling to see family. Most cable companies also have a large range of classes on demand that you can. Keeping active can help fend off usual winter colds. And lots of water can help flush things out and keep your skin from getting too dry!

What's your New Year's Resolution?

Gina Jacobs Thomas

Sure, I have the typical ones to ponder: be more healthy, save money, put a halt to this behavior or that. This next year, though, I have two major ones. The first one is to buy a new, bigger home. We're making a very big move this summer, and our goal is to find and purchase a larger home where our kids have room to breathe, run, and see all of their toys. My other goal is highly personal, but I've been doing some internal/spiritual work, and I'm resolving to try to rid my mind of unhealthy thinking patterns so that I can be more present on a more consistent basis.

How can moms find time to work out?

Gina Jacobs Thomas

Staying active while being a parent can be a challenge, but it's not impossible. Especially when you have children of various ages, finding time to work out can seem harder than ACTUALLY working out. In the past, I've experimented with working out early in the morning before the kids wake up, sneaking in workouts during naps, or working out after they go to bed. I've also squeezed in strength building exercises throughout my day - doing some stair leg exercises as I'm heading upstairs, abduction exercises while brushing my teeth, and squats while flying my 30-pound preschooler on my feet like superman while I'm laying on my back. Now that my kids are older, I've managed to get them involved in my workouts, which can make it fun for all of us. They love moving around trying to exercise with me, cheering Mommy on, and they burn off a little energy in the process.

What's your kids' favorite backyard game?

Gina Jacobs Thomas

We still love the old fashioned Freeze Tag. Our six year-old and our three year-old can both play it since the rules are pretty easy. And it's great because it can be played anywhere. Sometimes we change up what is considered the "safety place." Sometimes it's touching a tree, sometimes it's touching something plastic, sometimes it's making it to one of the two doors in the backyard. Bonus points if you're able to catch a grown-up!
