What's a tip for celebrating a holiday or milestone with your kids when your partner isn't able to be there?

We are currently experiencing our first deployment as a family and there is a learning curve to it all. But what I have learned is to not dwell on it but make the situation into a positive. Although your partner is not there to witness the little things, document EVERYTHING. I always have my camera handy so I can capture the moments for my husband. With the power of internet & Facebook these days, my husband never misses anything. And I always try to make each holiday & milestone special for my son, so he doesn't miss out either. I just tell my husband, we'll make up for next year and go all out when he gets back.

My husband also gave our son bear dressed in ABUs before he left. I make it a habit to take him everywhere we go and snap pictures of the bear participating in our activities. We call the bear Daddy Bear and our collection of pictures is named "Adventures of Daddy Bear." This way daddy always participates in a fun way too.

What have you learned about parenting from living in different places?

I have learned to adapt & change plans when need be. We live in Wyoming currently and it sometimes can snow up till June. So when the weather throws curve-balls, I sometimes have to change our plans. I have learned how to get creative with our surroundings and still make everyday fun.

I also have learned how to accept other cultures & see what's outside the box. Although we didn't have our son when we were stationed in Turkey, it really was an eye opener & I hope to teach my son some things about the country when he gets older.

What are your best tips for traveling with kids?

My best advice to be very organized & have everything they need in arms reach. Create busy bags and put them in a basket next to their car-seat. I like putting various books, toys & little snacks in ziplock bags and every time my son whines, I just hand a new one over. You don't even have to spend money to find new things to put in the bags. Lost toys that have been forgotten in their room, will become new again.
