My kids are 6 and 7 and they do several chores to earn money. They have 3 boxes to disperse their money in. Box#1 saving (for a big item they want) Box #2 spending on small things, and Box #3 God's money. We help them figure out how much of their earned money should go in each box. This way helps teach them that money is not just for spending.
I try to teach them about money in just casual conversation as well. The other day my daughter wanted to go the fancy ice cream store instead of the grocery store to get ice cream. While we were at the grocery store, I explained that we were able to buy 6 ice cream sandwiches for the same price her ice cream alone would have cost at the fancy ice cream shop. She couldn't believe it. So take little everyday moments to talk to your kids about money.
