What's your favorite kid-friendly app?
There are so many apps out there, it hard to pick apps without thinking about kids age and subject. Over time, I have created lists of best educational apps for different age groups by subjects. You can find the lists here: http://ow.ly/j83P3.
In general, I like the apps that show creativity and good understanding of child development. Some examples are: Faces iMake (http://ow.ly/iWmSx), Toca Doctor (http://ow.ly/iWnJO), Leo's Pad (http://ow.ly/iWo3y). For older kids, the Smithsonian series (http://ow.ly/j4GDu), Science360 (http://ow.ly/j4H5A), and Middle School Confidential series (http://ow.ly/j4Hcj) are clearly the ones having their audience in mind while they design the apps.
What tips would you give a mom who wants to become more tech savvy?
Never stop learning new things, take small steps and don't be afraid of asking other peole help, including your children. Today's technology changes so fast, when you think you get it, it is replaced by newer ones again. If you feel you can never catch up, you are not alone. I felt the same way all the time. However, we should not let that feeling stop us from learning new technology. Instead, use the anxiety as a driving force to learn more. A good place to start is iGameMom's How-To Section (http://ow.ly/j4IDH). You can find iDevice tips, app how to's, and tips on how to use apps to interact with your kids.
In addition, most app reviews on iGameMom have detailed information on how to use the apps. Our goal is not just recommend good educational apps, but also help parents feel comfortable to use it with their kids, including those who never used apps.
What's the most innovative gadget for children you've seen?
I would say iPAD. It transformed the way kids learn. It is intuitive to use, easy to operate, small to carry around. With the new technology, apps can incorporate multi-media materials (photo, video, sound) and features, such as multi-touch, augmented reality, accelerometer, into one package. This makes it possible for kids of different learning styles to benefit from the same app. I think this is one of the reason why iPAD is so popular among families with spedical need kids, it is also the reason why more and more schools are starting iPAD programs.
