What's your favorite kid-friendly app?

The iMums favorite kid friendly app is My Playhome by Shimon Young. This app features a beautifully designed virtual dollhouse with people of many different nationalities and different rooms to play in. The house features a great opportunity to tell social stories, eat in the kitchen, have a bedtime routine, play in the backyard and more. Every element of the app is touchable from opening and closing the curtains, to brushing your teeth and taking a bath. This app caters for 2-8 year olds which is appropriate as it’s simple enough for the younger users to play with yet detailed enough to keep the older kids entertained too. What tips would you give a mom who wants to become more tech savvy?

Becoming "tech-savvy" is a skill that is learned over time and it takes commitment and dedication to keep abreast of the rapidly moving world of technology. Keep an open mind and don't be afraid to have a go at the latest gadgets (ask your children, nieces and nephews if you can use theirs!). Also, if time and funds permit, try an Information Technology (I.T.) course at your local training college or do an online course, there are many free ones available!

What's the most innovative gadget for children you've seen?

The most innovative gadget for children has to be the iPad Mini. Apple totally revolutionized the technology industry with the introduction of the iPad, other companies had tried to introduce touchscreen tablets before, but the iPad was the first that was so simple and intuitive to use that even a young child could do so. The iPad led to a whole new class of technology. With the introduction of the iPad Mini Apple has taken this one step further by packing all the iPad’s great features into a smaller, lighter, easier to carry package that is truly child-sized. An amazing array of apps for children have been produced for the iPad over the last few years, and no other platform has this huge variety of high quality apps available. A child can use an iPad Mini to read a book, play a board game, practice Speech Therapy or work on their fine motor skills. They can learn about almost any subject imaginable from ABC’s and 1,2,3’s to algebra, the solar system and world geography. The iPad Mini is a great tool for engaging reluctant learners and for unlocking the potential of children with special needs; it can even give non-verbal children a voice through the use of AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) apps. The iPad Mini is a truly innovative product because it is so engaging and easy for children to use, from toddlers to teens, both normally developing and those with special needs and because it gives access such a wonderful array of apps in a truly child-sized tablet.
