What's the best part of raising a family in the South?

For me it's that my family is here. To be able to raise my daughter near her grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins is a huge blessing. I also love the pace of life in the South. And I'm crazy for southern traditions, like big hairbows and sweet tea and sitting in rocking chairs on the front porch when it rains. Where we live there is a great sense of community and it's so nice to encounter such friendliness from people almost everywhere we go. And the weather. I love the climate here.

What's the biggest misconception about living in the South?

I think the term "redneck" gets thrown around a lot with negative connotations. I love a country boy, personally. In my personal experience, a guy in a cowboy hat and boots is the first to stop and help a flustered new mom with her baby in public or pull over to help change a flat tire. There is a reason that down here we call them "good ole' boys." ;)

What do your kids love most about living in the South?

Scarlette is only two so I'm not sure she fully appreciates where she is being raised yet. She does love visiting her great-grandparents and playing in the cottonfields where my own great-grandparents worked. And I love that she has that kind of hands-on connection with her roots and her history.

We made these princess crowns out of cardboard paper towel tubes. It was so easy & the girls keep them in their dress up boxes - here are the instructions + photos: http://www.kaylaaimee.com/2012/08/7262/

What's a great toy for outdoor play that costs less than $15? Please share a photo or link if you have one.

Our water table is my toddler's favorite outdoor toy. She splashes happily in it on warm afternoons. These can be sort of pricey but you can almost always score them for $15 or less at garage or consignment sales!

What items have you repurposed after your child outgrew their use? Please share a link to a picture if you have one.

We made piggy banks and pencil holders and vases out of leftover formula cans (we had a LOT of formula cans!) The piggy banks were a huge hit for gifts, we wrapped them in colorful paper, trimmed them with ribbon and cut a slit in the top for coins!

My 2.5 year old is in charge of watering the herbs we keep in the container gardens on our porch. She loves watering each morning and also loves to help pick the mint :)
